1. Calcium Homeostasis After Thyroid Surgery
Abstract : Calcium homeostasis after thyroid surgery was studied during the immediate postoperative period and after one year. One day after hemithyroidectomy ionised calcium decreased whereas basal PTH did not change. EDTA stimulated maximal and total PTH secretion and set-point decreased on postoperative day 1 and normalised on day 7. READ MORE

2. Regeneration of Peripheral Nerves. The role of protein kinases, with emphasis on neurotrophic factor stimulation
Abstract : The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of protein kinases in peripheral nerve regeneration, with the use of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and nodose ganglia explants from adult mice. The effects of neurotrophic factor stimulation and protein kinase inhibition were studied for long (days) and short term (minutes) effects. READ MORE

3. Long-term neurogenesis after stroke in the adult rat brain
Abstract : Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability for which there is no treatment for functional recovery. Following stroke, striatal neurogenesis is increased, with newly formed neuroblasts migrating towards the damage. This response has so far been considered acute and transient. READ MORE

4. FDG-PET in Cervical Cancer - Translational Studies
Abstract : Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in females. The treatment, based on clinical FIGO stage, carries a significant risk of side effects. FDG-PET enables non-invasive studies of glucose metabolism. Cancer cells show an increased glucose uptake and metabolism that can be visualised and further analysed. READ MORE

5. Eco-immunological studies of innate immunity in Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos)
Abstract : This thesis comprises two sections, both of which explore eco-immunology of the innate immune system of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). The innate immune system serves a pivotal role as the first line of defense against invading pathogens, and is comprised of physical and chemical barriers. READ MORE
