  2. 2. Serotonergic and steroidal influences on impulsive behaviour in rats

    Author : John L. Evenden; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; impulsivity; serotonin; 8-OH-DPAT; DOI; steroid; testosterone; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; medicinsk farmakologi; Medical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : Impulsiveness is a trait contributing to the personality of all human beings to a greater and lesser extent. In a pathological form it can lead to impulsive behaviour which is an important component of many psychiatric and neurological disorders. READ MORE

  3. 3. Galanin : a modulator of serotonin neurotransmission : relevance for depression

    Author : Haleh Razani; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : galanin; 5-HT1A receptors; 5-HT; 8-OH-DPAT; fluoxetine; robalzotan; passive avoidance; microdialysis; mRNA; KD values; Bmax values; depression;

    Abstract : Galanin is widely distributed throughout the central nervous system with multiple and diverse biological roles. In the rat, galanin-like immunoreactivity is expressed in a population of5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin) neurons in the dorsal raphe (DR) with extensive projections to the forebrain areas e.g., hippocampus. 4. 4. Neuroendocrinology of agonostic interaction and social signalling in Artic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) : Studies on the neuroendocrine regulation of aggressive behaviour, stress responses and skin colour

    Author : Erik Höglund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Brain monoamines; social signalling; POMC; skin colour; stress; Salmonid; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : This thesis shows that socially subordinate Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) display elevated brain serotonergic (5-HT) and norepinephric activity along with a chronic activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis, including elevated plasma concentrations of á-MSH. Furthermore, subordinate fish showed an inhibition of aggressive behaviour and darker body coloration, skin darkness being positively correlated with plasma á-MSH. READ MORE

  5. 5. Role of oxytocin in glucose homeostasis and weight gain

    Author : Eva Björkstrand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to study metabolic functions of oxytocin in particular in relation to glucose, insulin and glucagon. Application of oxytocin locally in the pancreas (microdialysis technique) increased insulin (RIA) and glucagon (RIA) release. READ MORE
