17. Novel insights into the action of SHI/STY transcriptional regulators during plant development
Abstract : One key player in plant organogenesis is the phytohormone auxin, and this thesis reveal that members of the SHI/STY gene family participate in the regulation of auxin homeostasis and organ development in Arabidopsis thaliana. Using inducible constructs, ChIP, and EMSA, we could show that the SHI/STY members act as transcriptional activators directly binding to the promoter of the auxin biosynthesis gene YUC4. READ MORE

18. Nitrogen use efficiency and related functional traits in wheat : influence of genotype and environment
Abstract : Efficient use of nitrogen (N) is essential to decrease negative impacts of agriculture on the environment. This thesis evaluated the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of various wheat varieties, identified traits associated with high NUE and investigated the gene NAM-B1 in relation to some of these traits. 19. From Betterment to Bt maize : agricultural development and the introduction of genetically modified maize to South African smallholders
Abstract : Agriculture has received renewed attention in poverty reduction efforts in Africa in recent years, and there are hopes that GM crops could have an important role in helping increase smallholder yields and reduce poverty. Drawing on critical discourse analysis (CDA) and livelihoods perspectives, this thesis examines the ideas governing the Massive Food Production Programme (MFPP), an agricultural development programme aiming to reduce poverty by raising agricultural production in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, and its local effects when implemented in smallholder communities. 20. Phytoremediation of soil contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
Abstract : Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic compounds recognised for their persistence, mobility and potential toxicity. This thesis examines the efficacy of phytoremediation as a potential technique for managing PFAS-contaminated soil and groundwater. READ MORE
