11. The phencyclidine model of schizophrenia : dysregulation of brain dopamine systems induced by NMDA receptor antagonists
Abstract : Non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonists, such as phencyclidine (PCP) and dizocilpine (MK-801) can even acutely induce a drug induced psychotic state which closely resembles schizophrenia. The midbrain dopamine (DA) neurons, which originate in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), are involved in motivational, attentional and cognitive processes, and have also been profoundly implicated in schizophrenia. 12. Regulation of signal transduction in the striatum by typical and atypical antipsychotic drugs
Abstract : The only effective therapy for schizophrenia is based on the use of antipsychotic drugs. These substances act as dopamine D 2 receptor antagonists and can be classified as typical or atypical. Typical antipsychotics, e.g. READ MORE

13. Nicotinic effects on midbrain dopamine neurons : a dual mechanism of action
Abstract : The neurons of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system are located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in the mesencephalon and send their projections to forebrain structures, such as the prefrontal cortex, the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens. The dopamine system is important in regulating mood and motivation as well as cognitive function and appear to be primarily involved in drug dependence, since most drugs abused by man stimulate this system. 14. The diagnosis and protection of the auditory peripheral system
Abstract : The main focus of this thesis is on the diagnosis and prevention of peripheral hearing loss. An auditory evoked response measure (forward masking) was developed that specifically tests the function of the inner hair cells, independently of the outer hair cells. READ MORE

15. Circadian rhythm dysfunction in the suprachiasmatic nucleus : effects of Trypanosoma brucei brucei infection and inflammatory cytokines
Abstract : Alterations in the mammalian circadian pacemaker, the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), were studied in an experimental rat model of African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, caused by infections with subspecies of Trypanosoma brucei (T b). Characteristic signs of the disease are marked disturbances in circadian rhythms, such as a fragmentation of the sleep-wake cycle. READ MORE
