  1. 1. Properties of Activated Sludge Flocs

    Author : Britt-Marie Wilen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; floc strength; aerobic microbial activity; reflocculation; dissolved oxygen concentration; settling; deflocculation; filamentous microorganisms; shear forces; floc size; activated sludge;

    Abstract : The quality of the effluent from activated sludge treatment plants is highly dependent on the efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process. The aim of this thesis was to study (i) the effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on effluent turbidity and flocculation, as well as on the settling properties of activated sludge, for both short term and long term scales, and (ii) the influence of aerobic microbial activity on the stability of activated sludge flocs. 2. 2. Refining of hydrochars/ hydrothermally carbonized biomass into activated carbons and their applications

    Author : Wenming Hao; Niklas Hedin; Robert Mokaya; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrothermally carbonized biomass; activated carbon; full factorial design; activated carbon disc; nanoparticles; iron oxide; CO2 separation; methylene blue; adsorption; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : Hydrothermally treated biomass could not only be used as a fuel or a fertilizer but it can also be refined into high-value products. Activated carbons are one of those. READ MORE

  3. 3. Perspectives on Biofilms for the Removal of Organic Micropollutants in Wastewater

    Author : Ellen Edefell; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wastewater treatment; wastewater; biofilm; ozonation; activated carbon; powdered activated carbon; granular activated carbon; biological degradation; Moving bed biofilm reactor;

    Abstract : The use of biofilms to improve the removal of organic micropollutants in waste¬water treatment plants (WWTPs) has been investigated. The work is divided into two parts. In the first part, the use of biofilms for the biological degradation of micro¬pollutants was investigated. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modeling and Control of Bilinear Systems : Application to the Activated Sludge Process

    Author : Mats Ekman; Bengt Carlsson; Claes Breitholtz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bilinear systems; modeling; optimal control; parameter estimation; errors-in-variables; activated sludge process; Automatic control; Reglerteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns modeling and control of bilinear systems (BLS). BLS are linear but not jointly linear in state and control. In the first part of the thesis, a background to BLS and their applications to modeling and control is given. READ MORE

  5. 5. Crosstalk Between Activated Platelets and the Complement System

    Author : Osama A. Hamad; Bo Nilsson; Kristina Ekdahl-Nilsson; Lennart Truedsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; platelets; activated platelets; TRAP; chondroitin sulfate; C1q; factor H; C4BP; C3; Compstatin; complement; platelet-leukocyte complexes; platelet microparticles; Clinical immunology; Klinisk immunologi; Klinisk immunologi; Clinical Immunology;

    Abstract : Several studies have shown that complement and thrombotic events co-exist. Platelets have been suspected to act as the bridge between the two cascade systems. READ MORE
