  2. 2. Methods to measure mass transfer kinetics, partition ratios and atmospheric fluxes of organic chemicals in forest systems

    Author : Damien Johann Bolinius; Annika Jahnke; Matthew MacLeod; Michael McLachlan; Antonio Di Guardo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrophobic organic chemicals; vegetation; modified Bowen ratio; surface-atmosphere fluxes; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Vegetation plays an important role in the partitioning, transport and fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in the environment. This thesis aimed at addressing two key knowledge gaps in our understanding of how plants exchange HOCs with the atmosphere: (1) To improve our understanding of the uptake of HOCs into, and transfer through, leaves of different plant species which can significantly influence the transport and fate of HOCs in the environment; and (2) To evaluate an experimental approach to measure fluxes of HOCs in the field. 3. 3. Legacy persistent organic pollutants and chemicals of emerging concern in Sweden : from indoor environments to remote areas

    Author : Seth Newton; Cynthia de Wit; Ulla Sellström; Per Larsson; Annika Jahnke; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; persistent organic pollutants; atmospheric deposition; arctic; flame retardant; POP; long range transport; miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry;

    Abstract : Bulk atmospheric deposition samples were taken every two months for a year in 2009-2010 at two sites in northern Sweden and analyzed for a suite of legacy and emerging persistent organic chemicals including legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)  and novel flame retardants (NFRs).  To further investigate the urban occurrence and contribution to remote contamination of flame retardants, indoor air, ventilation system air, and dust were sampled in several microenvironments in Stockholm during the winter of 2012 for analysis of PBDEs, isomer-specific hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), and NFRs. 4. 4. Partitioning and persistence of volatile methylsiloxanes in aquatic environments

    Author : Dimitrios Panagopoulos; Matthew MacLeod; Annika Jahnke; Amelie Kierkegaard; Whelan Mick; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; siloxanes; organic carbon; sediment; partitioning; persistence; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The presence of volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS) in the environment has raised concerns among environmental chemists and regulators about their persistence and the risks they may pose to the environment. This thesis explores the partitioning and persistence of VMS in aquatic environments. READ MORE
