1. Cytokine studies in the generation and treatment of IgE-mediated allergy
Abstract : So called Th2 cytokines, such as IL-4 and IL-13 are responsible for the formation of IgE antibodies, the effector antibody in atopic allergy. Cytokines of Th1 type, for example IFN-g, inhibit these responses. This thesis describes work aimed at elucidating the cytokine production underlying IgE-mediated allergy. READ MORE

2. Life and death of human B cells in health and disease
Abstract : B cells provide one of the key mechanisms of immunological memory, which is theproduction of neutralising antibodies. How B cells respond to infections and vaccinationgives clues to how the development of the immunological memory is facilitated, and canthus lead to a deeper understanding of why the immune system sometimesmalfunctions. 3. Antibody- and Peptide-based Immunotherapies : Proof-of-concept and safety considerations
Abstract : The aim of cancer immunotherapy is to eradicate tumours by inducing a tumour-specific immune response. This thesis focuses on how antibodies and peptides can improve antigen presentation and the subsequent tumour-specific T cell response. Tumour recognition by the immune system can be promoted through delivery of antigen in the form of a vaccine. READ MORE

4. Functionally-associated target antigens in cancer. Defined by human antibodies and small interfering RNAs
Abstract : Cancer is the collective name for diseases that have one thing in common ? uncontrolled cell growth. The increase in cancer cell proliferation eventually results in tumor formation and, in the worst case, metastatic spread to other organs. Common treatment modalities of cancer include chemotherapy and radiation therapy. READ MORE

5. Maturation of humoral immune responses : Studies on the effects of antigen type, apoptosis and age
Abstract : The humoral immune response is dependent on the formation of antibodies. Antibodies are produced by terminally differentiated B cells, plasma cells. Plasma cells are generated either directly from antigen challenged B cells, memory cells or from cells that have undergone the germinal center (GC) reaction. READ MORE
