  1. 1. Thrombotic and cardiac disease in the antiphospholipid syndrome

    Author : Giorgia Grosso; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a highly heterogeneous disease that presents with obstetric complications and/or thromboembolic events that can hit any side of the vascular tree in an unpredictable way. The common trait among all patients affected by the syndrome is the persistent presence of the antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) and/or a prolonged coagulation time in vitro, the lupus anticoagulant (LA) test. 2. 2. Studies of clinical and haemostatic features associated with antiphospholipid antibodies

    Author : Anna Vikerfors; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are associated with a heterogeneous range of clinical conditions with predisposition for thrombosis, pregnancy morbidity and other autoimmune disorders, most frequently systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Both the clinical manifestations themselves and their treatment may be harmful to the affected individuals and aPL testing is still controversial. READ MORE

  3. 3. Antinuclear and antiphospholipid antibodies versus disease manifestations and clinical outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus

    Author : Martina Frodlund; Christopher Sjöwall; Jonas Wetterö; Thomas Skogh; Lene Dreyer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has an exceptionally heterogeneous clinical spectrum, ranging from mild disease limited to skin and joints to severe manifestations with renal disorder, central nervous system disease, severe cytopenias and thromboembolic events. Important clinical challenges include the prediction of disease flares and the identification of individuals that are likely to evolve severe disease with accrual of organ damage and worse prognosis. 4. 4. Studies on antibodies against phospholipids

    Author : Leopold Årfors; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Antiphospholipid syndrome; anticardiolipin antibodies; lupus anticoagulants; platelets; platelet activation; complement activation; endothelial cells; thromboxane; prostacyclin; acetylsalicylic acid.;

    Abstract : The main clinical features of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APLS) are arterial and venous thrombosis, repeated spontaneous abortions and thrombocytopenia. Diagnosed concomitant with an underlying disease the designation is secondary APLS; otherwise primary APLS. READ MORE

  5. 5. Novel immunological mechanisms and factors in systemic lupus erythematosus-related cardiovascular disease

    Author : Anna Cederholm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Systemic lupus erythematosus; cardiovascular disease; atherosclerosis; atherothrombosis; antiphospholipid antibodies; Annexin A5;

    Abstract : Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a clinical syndrome of autoimmune origin. It manifests in diverse clinical and serological patterns and is considered to represent a prototype multisystemic autoimmune disease. The etiopathigenesis of SLE remains incompletely understood. READ MORE
