  1. 1. Auditory and Olfactory Abilities in Blind and Sighted Individuals : More Similarities than Differences

    Author : Stina Cornell Kärnekull; Maria Larsson; Mats E Nilsson; Johan Willander; Fredrik U Jönsson; Johannes Frasnelli; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; absolute threshold; audition; autobiographical memory; blindness; discrimination; episodic recognition; identification; imagery; judgments of learning; memory; metacognition; olfaction; onset age of blindness; reminiscence bump; sensory compensation; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Blind individuals face various challenges in everyday life because of the lack of visual input. However, since they need to rely on the non-visual senses for everyday tasks, for instance, when navigating the environment, the question has been raised as to whether perceptual and cognitive abilities in these senses may be enhanced. 2. 2. Drug-based therapies for auditory trauma

    Author : Anette Fransson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Deafness is one of the most common health conditions in the developed countries, and worldwide, an estimated 70 million people are deaf. For people with severe to profound hearing loss, a cochlear implant is the only treatment today. The most common forms of severe hearing loss and deafness are related to morphological changes in the cochlea. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hearing in advanced age Epidemiological, pathophysiological, and diagnostic perspectives from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies

    Author : Hanna Göthberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Age-related hearing loss; Older adult; Hearing decline; Peripheral auditory function; Central auditory function; Audiological research;

    Abstract : The population aged 80 and above is expected to increase in the future resulting in an anticipated rise in health care demands. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is described as the third most common health condition associated with ageing. ARHL often results in communication difficulties and social isolation and is associated with cognitive decline. READ MORE

  4. 4. The diagnosis and protection of the auditory peripheral system

    Author : Mao Li Duan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cochlea; inner hair cell; outer hair cell; glutamate; post-synaptic receptor; auditory brainstem response; forward masking; noise trauma; hearing loss;

    Abstract : The main focus of this thesis is on the diagnosis and prevention of peripheral hearing loss. An auditory evoked response measure (forward masking) was developed that specifically tests the function of the inner hair cells, independently of the outer hair cells. READ MORE

  5. 5. Supra-threshold hearing loss and wide dynamic range compression

    Author : Henrik L Olsen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hearing impairment; compression; hearing aids; modulated noise; speech intelligibility; temporal resolution; modulation transfer function;

    Abstract : Cochlear hearing loss leads to deficits in many perceptual aspects, including threshold elevation (loss of sensitivity), reduction of auditory dynamic range (loudness recruitment) and problems with resolving sounds (loss of supra-threshold hearing). An ongoing debate is whether assessment of the individual supra-threshold hearing provides information which is likely to have an important influence on clinical decisions on signal processing strategies.
