  1. 1. Selection of the principal cause of death : studies on the basis of mortality statistics for rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : B Ingemar B Lindahl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : rheumatoid arthritis;

    Abstract : The official statistics of Sweden for 1971-75 show a 2.7-fold increase in mortality for men and a 3.0-fold increase for women attributed to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as the underlying cause of death. In order to investigate the basis of this observed increase, all death certificates for 1971 and 1975 with a diagnosis of RA (N=1224) were studied. READ MORE

  2. 2. Neuroprotection and axonal regeneration after peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Dag Welin; Lev N. Novikov; Lars B. Dahlin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dorsal root ganglion; Motoneuron; Axonal reaction; Peripheral nerve injury; Nerve regeneration; N-acetylcysteine; Hand surgery; Handkirurgi; Anatomy; Anatomi; anatomi; Human Anatomy; handkirurgi; hand surgery;

    Abstract : Following microsurgical reconstruction of injured peripheral nerves, severed axons are able to undergo spontaneous regeneration. However, the functional result is always unsatisfactory with poor sensory recovery and reduced motor function. READ MORE

  4. 4. Life and death of human B cells in health and disease

    Author : Andy Dernstedt; Mattias N. E. Forsell; Clas Ahlm; Jonas Klingström; Mats Bemark; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; b cells; antibody; hantavirus; germinal centre; phagocytosis; selection; DAF; vaccination; rituximab;

    Abstract : B cells provide one of the key mechanisms of immunological memory, which is theproduction of neutralising antibodies. How B cells respond to infections and vaccinationgives clues to how the development of the immunological memory is facilitated, and canthus lead to a deeper understanding of why the immune system sometimesmalfunctions. Abstract : β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is a neurotoxic non-proteinogenic amino acid produced naturally by cyanobacteria, diatoms and dinoflagellates and it has been detected in samples from fresh and marine water from all over the world. It can bioaccumulate in fish and shellfish, and has a potential to biomagnify in a terrestrial food chain. READ MORE
