  1. 6. Uncovering novel cell wall chemistries in gram negative bacteria : from development or dedicated peptidoglycan chemometric tools to functional genomics

    Author : Akbar Espaillat; Felipe Cava; Sun Nyunt Wai; Waldemar Vollmer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacteria; cell wall; peptidoglycan; peptidoglycan variations; D-amino acids; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Bacteria are surrounded by an external cell wall whose main component is a polymeric net-like structure called the peptidoglycan (PG) or murein sacculus. PG plays crucial roles in bacterial physiology (eg morphogenesis, growth fitness and regulation of innate immunity). READ MORE

  2. 7. Towards time-resolved molecular interaction assays in living bacteria

    Author : João Crispim Encarnação; Karl Andersson; Marika Nestor; U. Helena Danielson; Hélène Munier-Lehmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intracellular Molecular Interactions; Real-Time Cell Binding Assays; Bacteria; LigandTracer; Kinetics; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biofarmaci; Biopharmaceutics; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Rare and neglected diseases such as multidrug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis, malaria and trypanosomiasis are re-emerging in Europe. New strategies are needed to accelerate drug discovery to fight these pathogens. READ MORE

  3. 8. Interaction Between Drosophila melanogaster mbn-2 Cells and Bacteria

    Author : Karin Johansson; Kenneth Söderhäll; Lage Cerenius; Martin Bilej; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell biology; Drosophila; innate immunity; bacteria; host - pathogen interaction; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Innate immunity relies on a repertoire of germline-encoded non-rearranging pattern recognition receptors that bind to invariant microbial surface molecules. This event initiates a number of signal transduction cascades that lead to humoral and cellular defense responses like synthesis of antimicrobial peptides, phagocytosis and coagulation – mechanisms that efficiently fight infectious microorganisms and have been evolutionary conserved to exist in parallel with the antibody-based adaptive immunity found in vertebrates. 4. 9. Biological Diversity of Fish and Bacteria in Space and Time

    Author : Henrik Ragnarsson; Peter Eklöv; Kerstin Holmgren; Göran Englund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; species richness; fish; lake; biogeography; glacial; colonization; metacommunity; speciation; perch; bacteria; diversity; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Biological diversity is controlled by an array of factors and processes all active at different spatial and temporal scales. Regional factors control what species are available to occur locally, whereas the local factors determine what species are actually capable of colonizing the locality. READ MORE

  5. 10. Effect of surface characteristics on cellular adherence and activity

    Author : Marjan Dorkhan; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bacteria; microbial biofilm; dental implant; streptococci; oral bacteria; salivary pellicle; early colonizers; titanium oxide; microbial activity; oral keratinocytes; gingival fibroblasts; cell attachment; surface modification; anodic oxidation; anatase;

    Abstract : Ersättning av förlorade tänder med tandimplantat är numera en vanlig behandlingsmetod med generellt goda resultat. Antalet implantatsystem på den internationella marknaden har ökat kraftigt under senare år. READ MORE
