  1. 1. Air-Sea Fluxes of CO2 : Analysis Methods and Impact on Carbon Budget

    Author : Maria Norman; Anna Rutgersson; Erik Sahlée; William Drennan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; air-sea exchange; carbon dioxide; Baltic Sea; eddy-covariance method; inertial dissipation method; cospectral-peak method; Baltic Sea measurements; CO2 fluxes; Galathea 3 expedition; Baltic Sea modeling; water-side convection; coastal upwelling; carbon budget; Meteorology; Meteorologi;

    Abstract : Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an important greenhouse gas, and the atmospheric concentration of CO2 has increased by more than 100 ppm since prior to the industrial revolution.  The global oceans are considered an important sink of atmospheric CO2, since approximately one third of the anthropogenic emissions are absorbed by the oceans. 2. 2. Mesoscale Processes over the Baltic Sea

    Author : Nina Svensson; Erik Sahlée; Hans Bergström; Anna Rutgersson; Søren Larsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boundary layer; Baltic Sea; stable conditions; low-level jet; sea breeze; boundary layer rolls; mesoscale effects; WRF; LIDAR;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to study mesoscale processes above the Baltic Sea, which is a small, semi-enclosed sea where land-sea interaction may have a large impact on the offshore conditions. It is only the last tens of years that offshore research has become more popular, and one reason for this is the increasing offshore wind energy, which poses the need for accurate estimates of wind speed and turbulence conditions in the marine environment. 3. 3. Studies on Baltic Sea mysids

    Author : Martin Ogonowski; Sture Hansson; Jörgen Berge; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mysids; hydroacoustics; Baltic Sea; abundance; stable isotopes; specific dynamic action SDA ; diel vertical migration; partial migration; trophic interactions; physiology; benthic-pelagic coupling; protein:DNA; C:N ratio; genetic structure; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Mysid shrimps (Mysidacea, Crustacea) are efficient zooplanktivores in both marine and freshwater systems as well as lipid rich prey for many species of fish.  Although some efforts have been made to study the role of mysids in the Baltic Sea, very few studies have been carried out in recent time and there are still knowledge gaps regarding various aspects of mysid ecology. 4. 4. Mechanisms controlling air-sea gas exchange in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Lucía Gutiérrez-Loza; Anna Rutgersson; Erik Sahlée; Marcus Wallin; John Prytherch; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Air-sea gas exchange; Baltic Sea; CO2 flux; methane flux;

    Abstract : Carbon plays a major role in physical and biogeochemical processes in the atmosphere, the biosphere, and the ocean. CO2 and CH4 are two of the most common carbon-containing compounds in the atmosphere, also recognized as major greenhouse gases. READ MORE

  5. 5. Organic carbon dynamics in the Baltic Sea : A modelling perspective

    Author : Filippa Fransner; Jonas Nycander; Christoph Humborg; Andreas Oschlies; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; carbon cycle; organic carbon; primary production; remineralisation; terrestrial DOC; extracellular DOC; flexible stoichiometry; Redfield ratio; air-sea CO2 exchange; pCO2; coupled 3D physical-biogeochemical modelling; Gulf of Bothnia; Baltic Sea; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : Coastal seas constitute a link between land and the open ocean, and therefore play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Large amounts of carbon, of both terrestrial and marine origin, transit and are transformed in these waters, which belong to the more productive areas of the oceans. READ MORE
