  1. 6. Assessing Sub-Lethal Impacts of Petroleum Compounds on Marine Benthic Systems

    Author : Fredrik Lindgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; subletala effekter; mikrobiellt samhälle; meiofauna; petroleum; PAH; bildanalys;

    Abstract : Petroleum and its different distillates commonly end up in the marine environment. One source of these additions is discharges originating from shipping activities; accidents, ship wrecks, operational spills etc. READ MORE

  2. 7. Effect of Resuspension on Solute Fluxes and Organic Carbon Degradation in Marine Sediments

    Author : Elin Almroth; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Internal load has been discussed to be a reason for the still high concentrations of nutrients in the water column, in e.g. the Gulf of Finland (GoF), Baltic Sea, in spite of decreased nutrient load from land. READ MORE

  3. 8. Nutrient Dynamics and Exchanges Between a Mangrove Forest and a Coastal Embayment: Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar

    Author : Salim Mohammed; Frank Dehairs; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : Nutrient dynamics and exchanges were studied in the Mapopwe Creek, a tidally dominated mangrove lined waterway, and a shallow lagoon in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar, in order to assess whether there was any ecological coupling between the mangrove forest and adjacent ecosystems. In this study it was found that seasonal terrestrial input sources and benthic microalgal uptake strongly influenced the concentrations and distribution of dissolved nutrients in the system. 4. 9. The role of sediments in the biogeochemical cycles of nutrients in the Gulf of Riga

    Author : Juris Aigars; Matti Perttilä; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biogeochemistry; biogeokemi;

    Abstract : The sediment biogeochemistry of C, N, P and biologic silica (BSi) plays an important role in cycling of these elements in aquatic ecosystems. In shallow coastal and estuarine systems, water-sediment nutrient dynamics can influence biological processes (e.g., primary production) in overlying waters. READ MORE

  5. 10. Ecology and evolution of coastal Baltic Sea 'dead zone' sediments

    Author : Elias Broman; Mark Dopson; Nils Risgaard-Petersen; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea; sediment; oxygen; metatranscriptomics; metagenomics; 16S rRNA gene; RNA-seq; dead zone; re-oxygenation; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Abstract : Since industrialization and the release of agricultural fertilizers began, coastal and open waters of the Baltic Sea have been loaded with nutrients. This has increased the growth of algal blooms and because a portion of the algal organic matter sinks to the sea floor, hypoxia has increased. READ MORE
