1. Bioanalytical studies of designer benzodiazepines
Abstract : The fast appearance of benzodiazepine analogues, referred to as new psychoactive substance (NPS) or designer benzodiazepines, requires the continuous update of detection methods in order to keep up with the latest drugs on the recreational drug market. Moreover, as usually only limited information on toxicity and excretion patterns of these new drugs exists, this needs to be evaluated to report on adverse effects and to determine suitable targets for drug testing. 2. Suicide and drugs. Drug related suicide mortality and physicians' prescription patterns
Abstract : Aim: The aims of the study were to 1) analyse a possible association between changes in drug sales and the occurrence of drug poisoning suicides 2) assess the role of benzodiazepines in elderly suicides 3) analyse changes in suicide mortality after the introduction of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRIs 4) examine physicians' inclination to prescribe benzodiazepines in low and high prescribing areas. 3. Use and misuse of sedative drugs and related substances - Findings in the general population and in individuals with opioid dependence
Abstract : Background: Prescription sedatives are efficient in the treatment of anxiety and sleeping disorders, but are associated with a risk of misuse and dependence, as well as an increased risk of accidents, injuries and overdoses, both in the general population and especially in individuals with other substance misuse. The present thesis aims to investigate prescription sedative use and misuse in two kinds of samples - in the general population, with focus on its association with subjective health and quality life, and in the subpopulation of individuals with opioid dependence, with focus on treatment outcome in opioid maintenance treatment and mortality. Abstract : The thesis deals with hangover effects of alcohol and carry-over effects of benzodiazepine hypnotics on car driving performance. One study is presented regarding effects of alcohol, and two studies regarding effects of hypnotics. A driving simulator was used in all three studies. Abstract : Flunitrazepam (FZ) is an example of a sedative-hypnotic benzodiazepine whose pharmacokinetic properties include a rapid onset of action and an intermediate duration of action. It has a high affinity to central benzodiazepine receptors and affects them profoundly. READ MORE
