21. Conifer Evolution, from Demography and Local Adaptation to Evolutionary Rates : Examples from the Picea genus
Abstract : Evolutionary process can be inferred at three different levels: the species level, the population level and the molecular level. In this thesis, I applied approaches at these three levels and aimed to get a comprehensive picture of conifer evolution, from speciation and demography to geographic variation and local adaptation, and then to the molecular evolution of proteins and small regulatory RNAs. 22. Genetics and Growth Regulation in Salmonella enterica
Abstract : Most free-living bacteria will encounter different environments and it is therefore critical to be able to rapidly adjust to new growth conditions in order to be competitively successful. Responding to changes requires efficient gene regulation in terms of transcription, RNA stability, translation and post-translational modifications. READ MORE

23. Rates and patterns of bryophyte molecular evolution
Abstract : Plants have been growing on land for at least 450 million years. The bryophytes comprising the three phyla liverworts, mosses and hornworts, are considered to be the closest extant relatives to the plants that colonized land. READ MORE

24. Deciphering molecular mechanisms in the evolution of new functions
Abstract : The evolution of new genes and functions is considered to be a major contributor to biological diversity in organisms. Through de novo origination, “duplication and divergence”, and horizontal gene transfer, organisms can acquire new genetic material that can evolve to perform novel functions. READ MORE

25. Genomic and transcriptomic investigation of reproductive incompatibility in Drosophila
Abstract : Both nuclear and cytoplasmic elements can contribute to the emergence of reproductive incompatibilities that influence evolution and speciation. In the projects that compose this thesis, we use genomics and transcriptomics to study some of those elements in Drosophila. READ MORE
