  1. 1. Dried nanofibrillated cellulose and its bionanocomposites

    Author : Christian Eyholzer; Olli Ikkala; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Trä och bionanokompositer; Wood and Bionanocomposites;

    Abstract : During the past decade there has been a growing interest in the reinforcement of synthetic polymers with cellulose nanowhiskers and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) obtained from plants or bacteria. Their beneficial mechanical properties like high stiffness and strength, in combination with their low mass allowed successful reinforcement of water based polymer dispersions (latexes) for the production of solution cast composite films. 2. 2. Processing and properties of nanocomposites based on polylactic acid, chitin and cellulose

    Author : Natalia Herrera Vargas; Kristiina Oksman; Aji P. Mathew; Jyrki Vuorinen; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Nanocomposite; Cellulose; Chitin; Extrusion; Polylactic acid; Trä och bionanokompositer; Wood and Bionanocomposites;

    Abstract : The production of bio-based and biodegradable nanocomposites has gained attention during recent years for environmental reasons; however, the large-scale production of these nanocomposites still poses challenges. The objective of this work has been to prepare bio-based and biodegradable nanocomposites via liquid-assisted extrusion and to gain a deeper understanding of the process and the relationship between the process, composition, structure and properties. 3. 3. Extrusion processing of wood-based biocomposites

    Author : Maiju Hietala; Kaarlo Niskanen; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Trä och bionanokompositer; Wood and Bionanocomposites;

    Abstract : Interest in biocomposite materials and their use in various applications has been growing steadily over the past 10-15 years. Increasing environmental awareness and lower material costs are the main driving forces for using renewable materials, such as wood and cellulose fibers, as reinforcement in polymer composites. 4. 4. Improving properties of poly(lactic acid) biopolymer for use in food packaging

    Author : Mitul Kumar Patel; Kristiina Oksman; Mohini Sain; Marc Delgado Aguire; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biopolymer; poly lactic acid ; chitin nanocrystals; barrier properties; liquid assisted extrusion; Trä och bionanokompositer; Wood and Bionanocomposites;

    Abstract : The petroleum-based plastics are widely used for food packaging applications because of their low cost, easy processability, and tunable properties to meet the specific needs of food packaging. However, these polymers are non-biodegradable, leading to a substantial amount of plastic waste in both land and marine ecosystems. READ MORE

  5. 5. From bio-based residues to nanofibers using mechanical fibrillation for functional biomaterials

    Author : Linn Berglund; Kristiina Oksman; Monika Österberg; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Nanofibers; Industrial residues; Ultrafine grinding; Energy-efficiency; Network formation; Hydrogel; Trä och bionanokompositer; Wood and Bionanocomposites;

    Abstract : Bio-based resource utilization in different forms has been driven by societal, industrial and academic research interests towards the development of “green”, sustainable materials from renewable sources. Within this context, exploiting biomass from different industrial residues is further advantageous from an environmental and economic point of view, leading to minimization of residues by means of waste treatment and to the development of high-addedvalue- products.
