  1. 6. Towards unbiased 3D reconstruction : in single-particle cryo-electron microscopy

    Author : Dominika Elmlund; Hans Hebert; Sarah Butcher; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Bioengineering; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : Cryo-electron microscopy of freestanding molecules (single-particles) plays a pivotal role in the difficult and pressing challenge of determining the structures of large macromolecular complexes. Molecular volumes are generated by aligning large sets of randomly oriented two-dimensional (2D) projection images in three dimensions (3D) before reconstruction is performed using tomographic techniques. 2. 7. Engineering carbonic anhydrase for highly selective ester hydrolysis

    Author : Gunnar Höst; Bengt-Harald Jonsson; Lars-Göran Mårtensson; Per Berglund; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; carbonic anhydrase; specificity; hydrolysis; rational design; protein engineering; plasmodium falciparum; Bioengineering; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : I denna avhandling presenteras arbete utfört med enzymet humant karboanhydras II (HCAII). Enzymer är en typ av proteiner som accelererar (katalyserar) kemiska reaktioner, vilket är nödvändigt för allt levande. Den naturliga funktionen för HCAII är att katalysera omvandlingen av gasen koldioxid till vätekarbonat, som är löslig i vätska. READ MORE

  3. 8. Ethanol production from lignocellulose using high local cell density yeast cultures. Investigations of flocculating and encapsulated Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Johan Westman; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; yeast; encapsulation; lignocellulose; ethanol; fermentation; flocculation; inhibitors; tolerance; xylose; co-utilisation; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning; Resource Recovery;

    Abstract : Efforts are made to change from 1st to 2nd generation bioethanol production, using lignocellulosics as raw materials rather than using raw materials that alternatively can be used as food sources. An issue with lignocellulosics is that a harsh pretreatment step is required in the process of converting them into fermentable sugars. READ MORE

  4. 9. Glycoside hydrolases from Rhodothermus marinus Modular organisation and structure-function relationships

    Author : Maher Abou-Hachem; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; calcium-binding; modular; endoglucanase; thermostable; CBM; xylanase; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : The thermophilic bacterium Rhodothermus marinus produces several thermostable glycoside hydrolases. The studies presented in this thesis were performed on two enzymes, belonging to glycoside hydrolase families 10 and 12, produced by this microorganism. The family 10 xylanase, Xyn10A, is modular in architecture consisting of five domains or modules. READ MORE

  5. 10. Enzymatic Synthesis of Mixed Acid Phospholipids

    Author : Dietlind Adlercreutz; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; lysophosphatidylcholine; phosphatidylcholine; acyl migration; equilibrium; organic solvent; lipase; phospholipase; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : Mixed acid phospholipids are valuable compounds, which are used mainly in membrane- and lipoprotein research and in liposome technology. The chemical synthesis of these special lipids is rather difficult and involves both toxic chemicals and harsh reaction conditions, which makes the products less attractive for medical and biological applications.
