  1. 1. Regeneration in the adult brain after focal cerebral ischemia : exploration of neurogenesis and angiogenesis

    Author : Wei Jiang; Jukka Jolkkonen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; neurogenesis; angiogenesis; rats; mice; gliosis; BrdU; CBF; protein synthesis; ATP; penumbra; reperfusion; VEGF; 3-D confocal; photothrombosis; MCAO; Medicine; Medicin;

    Abstract : Background: Ischemic stroke ranks as the third major cause of clinical mortality and the leading cause of handicap in adults. Each year, stroke occurs in about 30,000 Swedes. The severity of an acute ischemic stroke depends mainly on the degree and duration of local cerebral blood flow (lCBF) reduction. READ MORE

  2. 2. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    Author : Andreas Arvidsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stereology; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; BrdU; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; subventricular zone; striatum; dentate gyrus; neuronal replacement; neuronal survival; Focal cerebral ischemia; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor;

    Abstract : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 3. 3. Skull base meningioma : Surgical and adjuvant treatment with clinical and PET evaluation

    Author : Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; Meningioma; cerebellopontine angle; translabyrinthine and transcochlear approaches; facial nerve; steretactic irradiation; proton beam therapy; interferon- alpha; PET; 11C-L-methionine; 76BR-BrdU; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : The treatment strategy for skull base meningiomas remains a controversial issue. Because of the proximity of these tumours to critical neurovascular structures, the risk for vascular damage and new cranial neuropathies postoperatively is significant. READ MORE

  4. 4. Adult Stem Cell Plasticity, Hype or Hope?

    Author : Jalal Taneera; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine human and vertebrates ; pancreatic beta cell ; stem cell ; plasticity ; Medicin människa och djur ;

    Abstract : Several studies have reported that bone marrow (BM)-derived stem cells have the capacity to give rise to cells of different type of tissue; an ability termed stem cell plasticity or transdifferentiation. Controversies exist as to how frequent this phenomenon is, or if it may be explained by alternative mechanisms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Validation of Several Nucleoside Tracers as Proliferation Markers

    Author : Li Lu; Sven Reske; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biopharmacy; PET; cell proliferation; DNA synthesis; hydroxyurea; cimetidine; diuretic; Biofarmaci; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : Positron emission tomography (PET) is a powerful method for in vivo characterization of tumor biochemistry and clinically has been used for diagnosing and grading of malignancy. A key element in oncology is proliferation potential, a feature that is assumed to be an important indicator of tumor growth. READ MORE
