  1. 1. Upholding the coral loop : Resilience, alternative stable states and feedbacks in coral reefs

    Author : Albert Norström; Magnus Nyström; Nancy Knowlton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; resilience; alternative stable states; regimes; feedbacks; recruitment; coral reefs; marine ecosystem management; regime shifts; phase shifts; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; naturresurshushållning; Natural Resources Management;

    Abstract : Coral reefs are suffering unprecedented declines in coral cover and species diversity. These changes are often associated with  substantial shifts in community structure to new dominant organisms. Ultimately, these “phase shifts” can be persistent and very difficult to return from. 2. 2. Interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and vegetation in the Fennoscandian tundra

    Author : Jonas Dahlgren; Lauri Oksanen; Johan Olofsson; John Terborgh; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gray-sided voles; tundra vegetation; trophic cascades; plant-herbivore interactions; bilberry; plant communities; herbivory; plant resistance; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi;

    Abstract : I have, in this thesis, studied the interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and tundra vegetation, on islands in, and mainland sites close to the lake Iešjávri, in northern Norway. As isolated islands are virtually free of predation, I have been able to compare plant-herbivore interactions in the presence and absence of predators. READ MORE

  3. 3. Sexual selection in Pomatoschistus – nests, sperm competition, and paternal care

    Author : Ola Svensson; Charlotta Kvarnemo; Sigal Balshine; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Female choice; Filial cannibaism; Gobiidae; Nests; Paternal care; Pomatoschistus microps; Pomatoschistus minutus; Sexual selection; Sperm competition; Teleostei; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Sexual selection arises through variation in reproductive success. This thesis investigates different aspects important in sexual selection, namely nest building, sperm competition, paternity and paternal care, and their mutual interrelationships. READ MORE

  4. 4. Capture-based mud crab (Scylla serrata) aquaculture and artisanal fishery in East Africa- Practical and ecological perspectives : Mud crab ecology and aquaculture

    Author : David Oersted Mirera; Per-Olav Moksnes; Olof Linden; Max Troell; Lewis Le Vay; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Mud crab; ecology; aquaculture; economics; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Abstract : Mud crab Scylla serrata is a crustacean that spends most of its life cycle in the mangrove environment throughout its range. Fishery and aquaculture of this crab are significant economic activities in coastal areas in the tropics and sub-tropics because of the meat quality and nutritional value. READ MORE

  5. 5. Flow preferences of upstream migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

    Author : Dan-Erik Lindberg; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : On their way from the sea to their spawning grounds in rivers, Atlantic salmon are often delayed or hindered by dams or other obstructions. Building a fishway can save a population that would otherwise go extinct. READ MORE
