  1. 1. C5a Receptor Expression in Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock

    Author : Mia Furebring; Jan Sjölin; Per Folllin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Communicable diseases; C5a receptor; granulocyte; severe sepsis; septic shock; chemotaxis; anti-C5a treatment; ex vivo incubation; C5a; interleukin-8; LPS; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : In patients with sepsis, the activation of the cascade systems, for example the complement system with the generation of C5a, is followed by a state of immunosuppression with impaired bactericidal capacity caused by suppression of the neutrophil granulocytes. To inhibit the C5a-induced systemic inflammatory and the following anti-inflammatory responses, different anti-C5a strategies have been successful in experimental models of sepsis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Molecular evolution of a C5aR antagonist against inflammatory disease

    Author : Erika Gustafsson; Institutionen för immunteknologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : New anti-inflammatory drugs with fewer adverse effects than existing drugs may prove to be useful in the treatment of several inflammatory disorders. A critical step in acute inflammation is the infiltration of neutrophils into tissues. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the induction of inflammatory reactions by Streptococcus pyogenes

    Author : Lisa Påhlman; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; virology; bacteriology; Microbiology; Streptococcal collagen-like surface protein; M protein; Inflammation; Streptococcus pyogenes;

    Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes is an important human pathogen that causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. In order to successfully infect the human host, S. pyogenes is equipped with tools that modulate the human immune defence. READ MORE

  4. 4. Crosstalk Between Activated Platelets and the Complement System

    Author : Osama A. Hamad; Bo Nilsson; Kristina Ekdahl-Nilsson; Lennart Truedsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; platelets; activated platelets; TRAP; chondroitin sulfate; C1q; factor H; C4BP; C3; Compstatin; complement; platelet-leukocyte complexes; platelet microparticles; Clinical immunology; Klinisk immunologi; Klinisk immunologi; Clinical Immunology;

    Abstract : Several studies have shown that complement and thrombotic events co-exist. Platelets have been suspected to act as the bridge between the two cascade systems. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cardioprotective treatment strategies

    Author : Jesper vanderPals; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ADC-1004; apyrase; Cardioprotection; ischemia reperfusion; hypothermia; t-PA;

    Abstract : In myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, complement activation, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) release contribute to myocardial injury. ATP is degraded into adenosine by the enzyme apyrase, and adenosine possesses cardioprotective properties. READ MORE
