  1. 1. Dietary exposure to persistent organochlorine compounds and health effects in women and their infants - Epidemiological studies on birthweight, cancer incidence, and mortality

    Author : Lars Rylander; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; birthweight; breast cancer; ischemic heart disease; n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids; CB-153; PCB; dibenzofurans; dioxins; fish consumption; persistent organochlorine compounds; gender ratio; Occupational health; industrial medicine; Yrkesmedicin; arbetsmiljömedicin;

    Abstract : In Sweden the main exposure route for both polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and other persistent organochlorine compounds is through consumption of fatty fish species from the Baltic Sea (the eastern coast of Sweden). Cohorts of fishermen's wives from the Swedish east and west coasts were established. READ MORE

  2. 2. Genetic, environmental and life-style effects on androgen receptor function

    Author : Christel Björk; Malmö Molekylärgenetisk reproduktionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reproductive function; smoking; 4 .4-DDE; persistent organic pollutants; prostate cancer; Androgen receptor; prostate specific antigen; CAG polymorphism; TCDD; aryl hydrocarbon receptor; CB-153;

    Abstract : Androgens regulate male reproductive function and their effects are mediated through the androgen receptor (AR). The AR gene contains a polymorphic CAG repeat, encoding a stretch of glutamines, affecting the transcriptional activity of the AR. READ MORE

  3. 3. Fertility and female dietary exposure to persistent organochlorine compounds

    Author : Anna Axmon; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; industrial medicine; Yrkesmedicin; arbetsmiljömedicin; Public health; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; epidemiologi; Occupational health; DDE; DDT; dioxins; polychlorinated biphenyls; persistent organochlorine compounds; stillbirths; miscarriages; Fertility; time to pregnancy;

    Abstract : Persistent organochlorine compounds (POC), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and dioxins, are long-lived and highly lipophilic compounds which are present in all biota today. In Sweden, one of the major exposure routes for POC is through the consumption of fatty fish from the Baltic Sea, which is off the east coast of Sweden, and one of the most highly exposed populations is the fishermen's wives and sisters from the east coast. 4. 4. EXPOSURE TO PERSISTENT ORGANOCHLORINE POLLUTANTS AND MALE SEMEN FUNCTION

    Author : Anna Rignell-Hydbom; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Miljömedicin; Environmental health; epididymal and accessory sex gland function; Y:X sperm chromosome ratio; sperm chromation integrity; sperm concentration; sperm motility; persistent organochlorine poluutants;

    Abstract : Persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and the insecticide dichloro-diphenyl-dichloro-ethylene (DDT) have been released into the environment mainly since the second World War. POPs accumulate especially in highly ranked predators of the aquatic food chain. READ MORE

  5. 5. Human exposure to organohalogen compounds in the Faroe Islands

    Author : Britta Fängström; Åke Bergman; Jake Ryan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PCB; PBDE; OH-PCB; human serum; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : The Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic are part of the sub-Arctic region, a remote region far from industrial activity. In spite of this remoteness, the Islands are not a sanctuary: exposures and effects of environmental pollutants mar its natural beauty and wildlife. READ MORE
