1. Vibrio cholerae modulates the immune defense of human gut mucosa
Abstract : The key function of innate immunity is to sense danger signals and initiate effective responses as a defense mechanism against pathogens. Simultaneously, effector responses must be regulated to avoid excessive inflammation with resulting tissue damage. READ MORE

2. Tick-borne diseases and the central nervous system : clinical and immunological aspects
Abstract : Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) is the dominating form of disseminated infection by the tick-borne bacteria Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi in Sweden as well as in Europe. READ MORE

3. Transcriptome based analysis of Hodgkin lymphoma : insights into the microenvironment
Abstract : This thesis is focused on the analysis of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), in particular the complex interaction between the malignant cells and the abnormally behaving bystander cells, and this complexity of the inflammatory infiltrate in HL constantly challenge scientists. The common thread in this thesis is the usage of gene expression profiling of whole tumour tissues, laser-captured Hodgkin Reed Sternberg (H-RS) cells and of cell-lines. READ MORE

4. Aspects of inflammation, angiogenesis and coagulation in preeclampsia
Abstract : Preeclampsia is a major challenge to obstetricians, due to its impact on maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality and the lack of preventive and treatment strategies. The overall aim of this thesis is to increase the knowledge of the pathogenesis of preeclampsia including the role of inflammation, angiogenesis and coagulation, both locally at the fetomaternal interface and in the maternal circulation. 5. Laboratory methods for investigation of the immunological orchestra in response to pathogens
Abstract : Laboratory methods used for investigation of immune response often involve collection of whole blood and analysis of different biomarkers in blood components or generated from pathogen stimulation of whole blood or peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Methods used to measure biomarkers are for example enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) which measures one biomarker at a time or multiplex assays for example x-unknown, multi-analyte profiling (xMAP) by Luminex or proximity extension assay (PEA), which can measure up to just over 3000 biomarkers at a time.
