1. Modulation of Autoimmunity by Linomide treatment or interference with costimulation
Abstract : Linomide is a potent immunomodulator that has been shown to inhibit autoimmunity in several animal models of autoimmune disease. We have approached the cellular and molecular mechanism of Linomide by investigating its effect on thymocyte development and its capacity to modulate the expression of activation markers on antigen presenting cells (APCs). 2. Sentinel Node Biopsy in Breast Cancer : Clinical and Immunological Aspects
Abstract : The most important prognostic factor in breast cancer is the axillary lymph node status. The sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is reported to stage the axilla with an accuracy > 95 % in early breast cancer. Tumour-related perturbation of T-cell function has been observed in patients with malignancies, including breast cancer. READ MORE

3. The ups and downs of T cells The role of costimulatory molecules in the modulation of T cell responses
Abstract : T cell activation requires the combination of antigen in the context of MHC and costimulatory molecules to induce a functional immune response. For our studies, we primarily utilized superantigens (SAg) that bind MHC class II molecules as first signal. READ MORE

4. Selection and use of affinity proteins developed by combinatorial engineering
Abstract : In affinity protein biotechnology the selective bindingbetween a chosen protein and an interacting biomolecule isutilized for a variety of applications including bioseparation, detection and therapy. Traditionally, affinity proteinsrecruited for such applications have been derived from naturalproteins or immunoglobulins generated via immunization routes. READ MORE

5. Involvement of T lymphocyte subsets in the rejection of murine tumors by syngeneic or autologous hosts
Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to study the requirement of CD4+ and CD8+ T Iymphocyte subset, CD28 costimulatory molecule and p56kk for the rejection of syngeneic tumor grafts, and the autochthonous tumors induced by Moloney murine sarcoma virus. It also addresses the role of CD4+ and CD8+ T subsets with regard to the polyomavirus persistence and tumor development. READ MORE
