  1. 1. Angiogenesis in human renal cell carcinoma : hypoxia, vascularity and prognosis

    Author : Johanna Sandlund; Torgny Rasmuson; Börje Ljungberg; Kjell Grankvist; Anders Bergh; Elisabeth Kjellén; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endoglin CD105; CD31; prognosis; CA IX; HIF-2α; renal cell carcinoma; tissue microarray; immunohistochemistry; real-time PCR; stage; grade; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : Background: Angiogenesis is recognised as a critical step in tumour progression. The angiogenic switch is activated by various trigger signals, such as hypoxia, low pH, and genetic mutations. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is often an aggressive tumour, and advanced disease has limited treatment options and bad prognosis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Host cell adhesion of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes

    Author : Carl Johan Treutiger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Plasmodium falciparum; erythrocyte rosetting; cytoadherence; cerebral malaria; PfEMPI; serum proteins; PECAM-I CD31;

    Abstract : Excessive binding of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes to the microvascular endothelium (cytoadherence) and to uninfected eryrthrocytes (rosetting) are regarded as key-events in the development of a severe malaria infection. P. falciparum rosetting was confirmed to be associated with the development of cerebral malaria in The Gambia. READ MORE

  3. 3. Variant antigens at the infected red cell surface in Plasmodium falciparum malaria

    Author : Victor Fernandez; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Plasmodium falciparum; blood stages; variant antigens; var PfEMP1; rif RIFIN; adhesive phenotypes; cytoadherence; endothelial receptor; PECAM-1 CD31; rosetting; heparan sulphate;

    Abstract : Disease severity in Plasmodium falciparum infections is, to a large extent, a consequence of the parasite's efficient escape from die human host defences. Sequestration and antigenic variation are two evasion mechanisms featured by P.falciparum. READ MORE

  4. 4. Endothelial cytoadherence, rosetting and virulence in Plasmodium falciparum malaria

    Author : Andreas Heddini; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Plasmodium falciparum; malaria; endothelial adhesion; erythrocyte rosetting; PECAM- 1 CID3 1; immunoglobulins; cerebral malaria; PfEMP- 1; var-genes;

    Abstract : Excessive sequestration of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes (pRBC) and uninfected erythrocytes directly blocks the microcirculation and precipitates severe symptoms from the affected organ and is thereby thought to be responsible for the severe complications which may occur during P. falciparum infection. 5. 5. Engraftment and tolerance induction in cellular therapy : focus on mesenchymal stromal cells

    Author : Karin Ljung; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Different cell types have been employed in the search for a cellular therapy that is applicable for the treatment of heart failure. Remuscularization strategies using stem-cell-derived cardiomyocytes have been prone to arrhythmias. READ MORE
