1. Carbon Nitride : Characterization and Protein Interactions
Abstract : This thesis concerns synthesis and characterization of carbon-based materials and theinvestigation of the possible use, of a selection of these materials, in biomedicalapplications. Protein adsorption and blood plasma tests were used for this purposeutilizing a surface sensitive technique called spectroscopic ellipsometry. READ MORE

2. Free-Vehicle Benthic Lander Technology for the Study of Biogeochemical Processes in Marine Sediments
Abstract : Various sediment sampling and incubation techniques were used to characterize benthic biogeochemical processes important for an improved understanding of the oceanic carbon cycle. Recent flux data from the Arctic Siberian shelf are revealing differences (often by a factor of ten) between areas affected by the big Russian river outlets (high fluxes) and areas with low influence from land (low fluxes). 3. Carbon Fibres from Kraft Lignin
Abstract : Kraft lignin has a high potential for use in more valuable applications than its current use as fuel in pulp mills and integrated pulp and paper mills. The possibility of using kraft lignin, a green material with a carbon content of more than 60 %, for the manufacturing of carbon fibres was investigated in this thesis. READ MORE

4. Adding Utility to Carbon Materials: Introducing Dopants Using Highly Soluble Metal Salts and Functionalizing Surfaces via Bromomethylation
Abstract : Carbon-based materials have received intense research interest over the past few decades due to their unique combination of properties including porosity, non-toxicity, chemical inertness, low density, and electrical conductivity, which has allowed them to find a wide array of applications including supercapacitors, batteries, CO2 capture, fuel cells, and catalysis. To expand their utility, a variety of techniques have been developed to enhance their reactivity and functionality. READ MORE

5. Method development for [11C]carbon monoxide radiochemistry
Abstract : Positron emission tomography (PET) is a non-invasive molecular imaging technique that has found extensive utility in biomedical research and in drug development. A fundamental pre-requisite for PET is the tracer, which is a biologically relevant molecule, labeled with a short-lived radionuclide. READ MORE
