  1. 1. Cardiac memory studies in two human models

    Author : Liliane Wecke; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cardiac memory; repolarization; pacing; WPW ablation;

    Abstract : Background: Cardiac memory is a form of electrical remodeling of the ventricles, where the T vector follows ("remembers') a previously altered QRS vector. On the electrocardiogram (ECG), it presents as T-wave inversions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Adaptation of ventricular repolarization to heart rate change in humans

    Author : Karl-Jonas Axelsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiac memory; hysteresis; long QT syndrome; QT adaptation; vectorcardiography; ventricular repolarization;

    Abstract : Background: Life-threatening cardiac rhythm disturbances and sudden death are common manifestations of heart disease. Disturbances in electrical recovery (ventricular repolarization; VR) are important mechanisms behind ventricular arrhythmias, which often occur in relation to changes in heart rate (HR). READ MORE

  3. 3. Cardiac arrest and therapeutic hypothermia: Prognosis and outcome

    Author : Malin Rundgren; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hypothermia; NSE; S-100B; EEG; cardiac arrest; prognosis;

    Abstract : Abstract Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the only treatment available to reduce neurological sequels for unconscious patients following cardiac arrest (CA). TH requires sedation and muscular relaxation, obscuring the clinical neurological examination for estimation of prognosis, and clinical decision making. READ MORE

  4. 4. Heparin coating and cardiotomy suction in cardiopulmonary bypass

    Author : Staffan Svenmarker; Torkel Åberg; Gunnar Engström; Thomas Karlsson; Jarle Vaage; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; cardiopulmonary bypass; oxygenators; heparin; S100 proteins; blood loss; haemostasis; memory; outcome and process assessment; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; kirurgi; Surgery;

    Abstract : The present thesis addresses various means of reducing inflammatory responses associated with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and retransfusion of pericardial suction blood (PSB) during cardiac surgery. Four (I-IV) prospective randomised controlled clinical trials comprising 475 patients were performed in the following areas: effects of heparin coating on measures of clinical outcome and memory function (I, II), inflammatory reactions in PSB and its systemic effects after retransfusion using cardiotomy suction or cell salvage (III) and effects of retransfusion of PSB on memory function and release patterns of protein S100B (IV). 5. 5. Cognitive function after cardiac arest and targeted temperature management

    Author : Gisela Lilja; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest; cognition; neurological outcome; Quality of Life; Social participation;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on cognitive impairment in Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) survivors with the main aim to evaluate possible effects by targeted temperature management. Secondary aims are to describe the prevalence of cognitive impairment in a large group of OHCA-survivors, the related symptoms of psychological distress and the actual effect of cognitive impairment for the patient’s ability to participate in everyday life and in the society (as work).
