  1. 1. Physiology of Adventure Racing : with emphasis on circulatory response and cardiac fatigue

    Author : C. Mikael Mattsson; Björn Ekblom; Keith P George; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiovascular drift; cardiac fatigue; adventure race; cardiac biomarkers; cardoac function; exercise echocardiography; Physiology; Fysiologi; Cardiology; Kardiologi; Sports; Idrott; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Abstract : The overall aims of this thesis were to elucidate the circulatory responses to ultra-endurance exercise (Adventure Racing), and furthermore, to contribute to the clarification of the so called “exercise-induced cardiac fatigue” in relation to said exercise. An Adventure race (AR) varies in duration from six hours to over six days, in which the participants have to navigate through a number of check-points over a pre-set course, using a combination of three or more endurance/outdoor sports, e. 2. 2. Heart and lung function - in health and disease : methodological studies in clinical physiology

    Author : Sofia Erelund; Nina Sundström; Urban Wiklund; Sandra Arvidsson; Bengt Johansson; Carl-Johan Carlhäll; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; clinical physiology; reference materials; ECG; dynamic spirometry; HRV; rheumatoid arthritis; cardiovascular disease; ischemic heart disease; Clinical Physiology; klinisk fysiologi;

    Abstract : The human heart and lungs constitute an intricate and dynamic system. Various clinical physiological examinations can be used to evaluate cardio-pulmonary function and identify abnormalities. Thus, it is important to understand how normal physiology presents, to be able to identify pathological findings. READ MORE

    Abstract : The worldwide increasing number of persons affected by largely preventable diseases like diabetes demands better prevention and treatment. Insulin is required for effective utilisation of circulating nutrients. READ MORE

  4. 4. Connecting CMR and Physiology : Expanding the capabilities of cardiovascular magnetic resonance in quantifying physiology

    Author : Felicia Seemann; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kardiovaskulär magnetresonanstomografi; Fysiologi; Atrioventrikulär klaffplansrörlighet; Mitralisflöde; Tryck-volym loopar; Kraft-längd loopar; Cardiovascular magnetic resonance; Physiology; Atrioventricular plane displacement; Transmitral flow; pressure-volume loops; Ventricular force-length loops;

    Abstract : The assessment of cardiovascular physiology is crucial to facilitate clinical diagnostics, treatment, and research. Physiology and anatomy can be assessed noninvasively using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), a versatile and reliable medical imaging modality free from ionizing radiation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Autonomic cardiac control in long QT syndrome : clinical studies of arrhythmogenic triggers

    Author : Anna Lundström; Annika Rydberg; Urban Wiklund; Håkan Eliasson; Jacob Tfelt-Hansen; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Background: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an inherited cardiac disease characterized by prolonged cardiac repolarization and an increased risk for life-threatening arrhythmias. These arrhythmias are typically triggered by adrenergic stimuli, such as physical activity and intense emotions, implicating that the sympathetic part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is involved in arrhythmogenesis.
