  1. 1. Effects of ethanol on NMDA receptor-mediated functions in primary cultures of cerebellar granule cells

    Author : Aleta Cebere; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Glutamate; NR2A and NR2B subunits; NMDA ethanol; homoquinolinic acid; glycine; spermidine; NMDA receptor antagonists; Ca 21; neurotoxicity; neuroprotection; AP-1; RT-PCR; Western blot; cerebellar granule cells;

    Abstract : Primary cultures of cerebellar granule cells were used to investigate the effects of acute and chronic exposure of ethanol on NMDA receptor functions and to examine the possible sites of interaction between ethanol and the NMDA receptor. Activation of NMDA receptors induced elevation of free cytoplasmic Ca2+, Ca2+ influx, activation of protein kinase C and neurotoxicity. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on the Bcl-2 Family of Apoptosis Regulators in the Nervous System

    Author : Susanne Hamnér; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; Bcl-2; Bcl-w; Bad; Apoptosis; Nervous system; Cerebellar granule cells; Sympathetic neurons; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Developmental Neurosciences; medicinsk utvecklings- och neurobiologi;

    Abstract : Apoptosis is a type of cell death with a specific morphology and molecular program, which is essential for the development of the nervous system. However, inappropriate cell death has been implicated in several neurodegenerative diseases. READ MORE

  3. 3. Molecular mechanisms of metal toxicity in neuronal cells

    Author : Annamaria Rossi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Modification of signal transduction by toxic agents can affect cell metabolism and physiological activity, impair cell capacity to adequately respond to hormones and growth stimuli and consequently compromise cell survival. This thesis describes studies on the interactions between toxic metals, at concentrations comparable to environmental exposure, and Ca2+ signalling in neuronal cells. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mechanisms of apoptosis in secretory and neuronal cells : role of oxidative stress and calcium overload

    Author : Maria Ankarcrona; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Apoptosis is a widespread physiological mechanism to regulate tissue homeostasis both during development and in adult organs. However, the cell deletion program can be inappropriately activated or suppressed under pathological conditions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Neuronal and endocrine cells' susceptibility to physiologic and toxic stimuli : a study on the effects of steroid hormones

    Author : Eva Ahlbom; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The propensity of a cell to die can be influenced by a number of factors, including hormones, which affect the intracellular and extracellular milieu. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of hormones on cell fate in the nervous system and in the pituitary, with special reference to glucocorticoid and gonadal hormones. READ MORE
