  1. 1. Modelling of Bingham Suspensional Flow : Influence of Viscosity and Particle Properties Applicable to Cementitious Materials

    Author : Annika Gram; Björn Lagerblad; Ulrich Diederichs; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Self-Compacting Concrete; SCC; Fresh concrete flow; Numerical simulation; Viscosity; Open channel flow;

    Abstract : Simulation of fresh concrete flow has spurged with the advent of Self-Compacting Concrete, SCC. The fresh concrete rheology must be compatible with the reinforced formwork geometry to ensure complete and reliable form filling with smooth concrete surfaces. READ MORE

  2. 2. Flow processing and gel formation for producing biopolymer drops with functional shapes and diffusion properties

    Author : Bernhard Walther; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; drop deformation; 4-roll mill; biopolymer; agarose; shear; Kappa-carrageenan; elongation; microstructure; flow processing; drop-shaping; rheology; poly ethyleneglycol ; diffusion; gelatine; NMR; gel formation; TEM; flow channel;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the development of novel processes which combine flow-induced drop deformation and simultaneous temperature-induced gel formation in order to create shaped biopolymer drops. The drops are functional in terms of rheology and diffusion properties, factors strongly influencing the consistency of food products and flavour or drug release. READ MORE

  3. 3. Experimental Studies of Separated Flow and Heat Transfer in a Ribbed Channel

    Author : Lei Wang; Värmeöverföring; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Energiforskning; plasma; Energy research; fluiddynamik; Gaser; fluid dynamics; plasmas; Gases; Particle image velocimetry; Liquid crystal thermography; ribbed channel; heat transfer; turbulence properties; separated flow; coherent structures;

    Abstract : The main concern of this thesis is to experimentally investigate the turbulent flow and heat transfer in a ribbed channel. Such flows are encountered in many engineering applications, e.g., gas turbine cooling. READ MORE

  4. 4. Simulation of individual cells in flow

    Author : Lailai Zhu; Luca Brandt; Michael Graham; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydrodynamic interaction; swimming microorganisms; capsule; Stokes flow; finite element method; boundary integral method; general geometry Ewald method; spectral element method; viscoelastic fluid; cellular deformation; flow cytometry; cell sorting; microrheology; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering Mechanics;

    Abstract : In this thesis, simulations are performed to study the motion ofindividual cells in flow, focusing on the hydrodynamics of actively swimming cells likethe self-propelling microorganisms, and of passively advected objects like the red bloodcells. In particular, we develop numerical tools to address the locomotion ofmicroswimmers in viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries, as well as the motion ofdeformable capsules in micro-fluidic flows. 5. 5. Experimental Heat Transfer, pressure drop, and Flow Visualization of R-134a in Vertical Mini/Micro Tubes

    Author : Wahib Owhaib; Björn Palm; Tassos Karayiannis; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Minichannel; microchannel; heat transfer; pressure drop; single-phase; two-phase; flow boiling; flow visualization; dry out; bubble behavior; flow pattern.; Mechanical energy engineering; Mekanisk energiteknik;

    Abstract : For the application of minichannel heat exchangers, it is necessary to have accurate design tools for predicting heat transfer and pressure drop. Until recently, this type of heat exchangers was not well studied, and in the scientific literature there were large discrepancies between results reported by different investigators. READ MORE
