  1. 1. Telomeric DNA in Chironomus, a naturally telomerase-free system

    Author : Monika Rosén; Udo Häckers grupp Utvecklingsbiologi i invertebrater; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Chironomus; extrachromosomal telomeric repeats; RNA-DNA complex; 3´overhang; telocentric chromosome end; Telomere; complex repeats; Biologi; Genetics; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Telomeres are specialized complexes of DNA and associated proteins that protect the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes. Although most organisms have short repeated DNA sequences at their telomeres, which are specified and maintained by the enzyme telomerase, there are a few exceptions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Classes of DNA associated with telomeres in the chironomids C. pallidivittatus and C. tentans

    Author : Iréne Kamnert; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetics; Chironomus; subtelomere; gene conversion; subfamilies; telomere; complex repeats; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Telomeres in Chironomus consist of long complex tandem DNA repeats, which in C. pallidivittatus have been shown to extend to the extreme end of chromosomes. In C. pallidivittatus the telomeric repeats are present in large blocks, 50-200kb in size, most of them belonging to four major subfamilies. READ MORE

  3. 3. Pre-mRNA processing in the polytene nuclei of chironomus tentans

    Author : Göran Baurén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Pre-mRNA processing; Organization of splicing factors; Cotranscriptionalsplicing; Transcription termination; Chironomus tentans; Polytene nuclei.;

    Abstract : Gene expression of protein encoding genes in eukaryotic cells requires extensive intranuclear maturation processing of the transcribed pre-mRNA. Three such processes are known to occur. The 5' end is capped and the 3' end is determined by cleavage and polyadenylation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Isolation and functional characterization of Hrp65-binding proteins in Chironomus tentans

    Author : Eva Kiesler; Neus Visa; Benjamin Blencowe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gene expression; RNA-binding proteins; mRNA biogenesis; nuclear structure; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : It is well-established that the organization of nuclear components influences gene expression processes, yet little is known about the mechanisms that contribute to the spatial co-ordination of nuclear activities. The salivary gland cells of Chironomus tentans provide a suitable model system for studying gene expression in situ, as they allow for direct visualization of the synthesis, processing and export of a specific protein-coding transcript, the Balbiani ring (BR) pre-mRNA, in a nuclear environment in which chromatin and non-chromatin structures can easily be distinguished. 5. 5. Assembly and transport of messenger and ribosomal RNP particles in the dipteran Chironomus tentans

    Author : Teresa Soop; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Gene expression in eukaryotic organisms commences with the synthesis of a precursor RNA, which has to be extensively processed to yield a mature RNA molecule. In addition to processing, the RNA molecule needs to associate with a proper set of proteins. READ MORE
