During the last ten years, the attention has been drawn to different forms of neurological disorders supposed to be caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cobalamin/folate status and its relation to cognition and behaviour in psychogeriatric patients

    Author : Karin Nilsson; Lund Psykiatri; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; klinisk psykologi; Psykiatri; psychosomatics; clinical psychology; Psychiatry; folate; Cobalamin; homocysteine; methylmalonic acid; dementia; psychogeriatric patients; delirium; psykosomatik;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic potentials of four different biochemical markers, serum cobalamin, blood folate, plasma homocysteine and serum methylmalonic acid for diagnosis of cobalamin/folate deficiency in a psychogeriatric population. The second aim was to investigate the relationship between these markers and various clinical and functional parameters of the nervous system in patients with dementia disorders. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on Vitamin B12 and Folate Deficiency Markers in the Elderly : A Population-based Study

    Abstract : The aims of this study were to document the levels of cobalamin, folate, methylmalonic acid (MMA) and total homocysteine (tHcy) in serum and their relations to symptoms, clinical findings, and other factors in order to improve the possibilities of detecting early deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate, and to study the effects of cobalamin and folic acid treatment over a three-year period. The study population consisted of a 20% random sample of persons 70 years or older living in Älvkarleby in mid-Sweden. READ MORE

  5. 5. Peripheral neuropathy and altered cobalamin metabolism in Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders

    Author : Mattias Andréasson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) that may carry different underlying aetiologies. Studies have suggested PNS involvement may be prevalent in neurological diseases that traditionally have been regarded primarily as disorders of the central nervous system (CNS), including the neurodegenerative disorder Parkinson’s disease (PD).
