1. From single-molecule sensing to extracellular vesicles in glioma cells under stress
Abstract : This thesis describes the work I conducted in two different areas, namely biomolecular sensing and quantitative cell biology. The work in the former area was focused on the optimization of plasmonic metamaterials for sensing applications, and in the latter on the characterization of extracellular vesicles released by glioblastoma cells under stress conditions. 2. Numerical Approximation of Reaction and Diffusion Systems in Complex Cell Geometry
Abstract : The mathematical modelling of the reaction and diffusion mechanism of lipophilic toxic compounds in the mammalian cell is a challenging task because of its considerable complexity and variation in the architecture of the cell. The heterogeneity of the cell regarding the enzyme distribution participating in the bio-transformation, makes the modelling even more difficult. READ MORE

3. Electrostatic Interactions in Complex Liquids : A Thermodynamic Analysis Based on the Poisson-Boltzmann Equation and the Flexible Surface Model
Abstract : The aim of this study was to analyse physico-chemical properties of some complex liquids using the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) cell model; to extend the theory to cover bilayer systems with complex global geometry; finally to apply this new extended model to such bilayer systems. The PB cell model provides a practical tool to examine counterion association and phase behaviour for structures of simple geometries; cylindrical and spherical. READ MORE

4. Simulation of individual cells in flow
Abstract : In this thesis, simulations are performed to study the motion ofindividual cells in flow, focusing on the hydrodynamics of actively swimming cells likethe self-propelling microorganisms, and of passively advected objects like the red bloodcells. In particular, we develop numerical tools to address the locomotion ofmicroswimmers in viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries, as well as the motion ofdeformable capsules in micro-fluidic flows. 5. Growth of Semiconductor Nanowires for Solar Cell Applications
Abstract : Nanowires have the ability to absorb light much more efficient than conventional thin film layers. This makes them candidates for the development of new types of solar cells that have higher efficiency and lower material usage than current technologies. READ MORE
