  1. 1. Selection of Resistance at very low Antibiotic Concentrations

    Author : Erik Gullberg; Dan I Andersson; Diarmaid Hughes; Linus Sandegren; Laura Piddock; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; Selection; Antibiotic resistant bacteria; Minimal inhibitory concentration; Heavy metals; Conjugative plasmid; ESBL; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Biology with specialization in Microbiology; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution;

    Abstract : The extensive medical and agricultural use and misuse of antibiotics during the last 70 years has caused an enrichment of resistant pathogenic bacteria that now severely threatens our capacity to efficiently treat bacterial infections. While is has been known for a long time that high concentrations of antibiotics can select for resistant mutants, less is known about the lower limit at which antibiotics can be selective and enrich for resistant bacteria. 2. 2. Evolution and Mechanisms of Tigecycline Resistance in Escherichia coli

    Author : Marius Linkevičius; Dan I. Andersson; Linus Sandegren; Patrice Courvalin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Tigecycline; Bacterial resistance; Fitness; Escherichia coli; AcrAB; LPS; Tet proteins; Tet A ; Tet K ; Tet M ; Tet X ; tet genes; pUUH239.2; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Antibiotic resistance is an ongoing global medical crisis and we are in great need of new antibacterial agents to combat rapidly emerging resistant pathogens. Tigecycline is one of few drugs that have been introduced into medicine during the last two decades. READ MORE

  3. 3. Exploring the mechanistic details of Gram-positive Type 4 Secretion Systems

    Author : Lena Lassinantti; Ronnie Berntsson; A. Elisabeth Sauer-Eriksson; Sjoerd Wanrooij; Samuel Wagner; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antimicrobial resistance; Horizontal gene transfer; Gram-positive bacteria; Type 4 Secretion Systems; Conjugation; Enterococcus faecalis; pCF10; PrgU; PcfF; PrgB; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Hospital acquired (i.e. nosocomial) infections and antibiotic resistance are large issues in the world today, with about 1.3 million people estimated to have died from antibiotic resistant infections in 2019 alone, and these problems are on the rise. READ MORE

  4. 4. Fluoroquinolone resistance in the environment and the human gut – Analysis of bacterial DNA sequences to explore the underlying genetic mechanisms

    Author : Anna Johnning; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antimicrobial resistance; Quinolones; Pollution; Next generation sequencing; Bioinformatics; Next generation sequencing;

    Abstract : Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotics that target type II topoisomerases. High-level resistance is often caused by mutations in the target genes of FQs, especially in gyrA and parC. In contrast, plasmid-mediated resistance genes, such as qnr, often confer moderate levels of resistance. READ MORE
