  1. 6. Engineering cyanobacteria for increased growth and productivity

    Author : Feiyan Liang; Peter Lindblad; Pia Lindberg; Olaf Kruse; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; CBB cycle; growth; biomass; photosynthesis; ethanol;

    Abstract : Increasing the photosynthetic efficiency is one of the strategies to increase the crop yields to meet the requirement of 50% more food by 2050. Due to the similarity on photosynthesis between crops and cyanobacteria, cyanobacteria are ideal alternatives to study photosynthesis since cyanobacteria are prokaryotes, easier to engineer and have shorter life cycle. 2. 7. External Growth Control of Baltic Sea Cyanobacteria

    Author : Anna Zakrisson; Ulf Larsson; Jakob Walve; Elena Gorokhova; Catherine Legrand; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; diazotrophs; diazotrophy; heterocysts; primary productivity; stable isotopes; sewage treatment; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The overall aim of the study was to provide better insights to the ecological role and impact of cyanobacteria in Baltic Sea (BS) bay, coastal and open sea areas. Biomass and heterocyst development of diazotrophic, heterocystous cyanobacteria were monitored over several years simultaneously as physical parameters such as nutrients and temperature. READ MORE

  3. 8. External Growth Control of Baltic Sea Cyanobacteria

    Author : Anna Zakrisson; Ulf Larsson; Jakob Walve; Elena Gorokhova; Sanna Suikkanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea; cyanobacteria; nitrogen fixation; heterocysts; Aphanizomenon; Nodularia; water treatment; Himmerfjärden; sewage; climate; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : In the Himmerfjärden Bay a large excess of nitrogen over phosphorus in the discharge from a large sewage treatment plant (STP) has suppressed growth of diazotrophic cyanobacteria in its inner parts. Implementation of nitrogen removal in the STP in 1997 drastically reduced nitrogen load and triggered growth of diazotrophs, mainly Aphanizomenon sp. READ MORE

  4. 9. Heterocystous cyanobacteria, Dps proteins and H2 production

    Author : Christoph Howe; Karin Stensjö; Felix Howe; Nir Keren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : H2 production; Cyanobacteria; Dps; ferritin-like proteins; iron; nutrient limitation; oxidative stress; biofilm; photobioreactor; iron homeostasis; H2O2;

    Abstract : To mitigate climate change, CO2-emitting technologies have to be exchanged by renewable alternatives such as H2. H2 can be produced by cyanobacteria, but major efforts to enhance H2 production yields by genetic modifications or optimised cultivation conditions resulted in energetic photo-to-H2 conversion efficiencies of 4. 5. 10. Development of Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics Tools : From Hydrogen Evolution to Cell Division in Cyanobacteria

    Author : Fernando Lopes Pinto; Peter Lindblad; Röbbe Wünschiers; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; hydrogen; RNA; bioinformatics; RT-PCR; RACE; transcription; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; Molecular Biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : The use of fossil fuels presents a particularly interesting challenge - our society strongly depends on coal and oil, but we are aware that their use is damaging the environment. Currently, this awareness is gaining momentum, and pressure to evolve towards an energetically cleaner planet is very strong. READ MORE
