  1. 1. Human body composition. Reference data and anthropometric equations. The metabolic syndrome and risk

    Author : Ingrid Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : adults; anthropometry; atherosclerotic morbidity; body composition; body fat; cardiovascular disease; DEXA; dual energy x-ray absorptiometry; fat-free mass; FFM; humans; metabolic syndrome; morbidity; mortality; prediction equations; randomly selected sample; reference data; sagittal trunk diameter; TBK; total body potassium; waist circumference;

    Abstract : The determination of body composition is a key to the understanding of the relation between obesity and disease. In order to evaluate body composition data, reference values are needed. Since methods with high validity and reproducibility are expensive and often time consuming, simpler techniques based on anthropometry are needed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery, aspects of graft choice, graft fixation and bone mineral loss

    Author : Sven Stener; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anterior cruciate ligament; Reconstruction; Revision; PLLA; Bone mineral areal mass; DEXA;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to measure bone mineral changes in the calcanei, hips and lumbar spine of patients reconstructed with bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) or hamstring tendon (HT) autografts following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Furthermore, the aim was to compare the clinical results after ACL revision reconstruction with either reharvested ipsilateral or contralateral BPTB autografts. READ MORE

  3. 3. A clinical study of uncemented hip arthroplasty : radiological findings of host-bone reaction to the stem

    Author : Henrik Bodén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Arthroplasty; bone remodelling; DEXA; fixation; geometrical design; hydroxyapatite; osteoarthritis; scintigraphy; stem size; stress-shielding; tapered; titanium; uncemented; weight-bearing.;

    Abstract : In total hip arthroplasty (THA), the main reason for failure leading to revision is aseptic loosening. Both mechanical and biological effects act in the loosening process, the factors may be implant design, fixation mode or technique, as well as biological factors unique to the individual. READ MORE

  4. 4. Assessment of Body Composition Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

    Author : Joel Kullberg; Hans Frimmel; Tomas Gustavsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Bildanalys; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; Digital Image Processing; Segmentation; Morphology; Body Composition; Whole Body Imaging; Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue; Visceral Adipose Tissue; Anthropometry; Bildanalys;

    Abstract : Methods for assessment of body composition allow studies of the complex relationships between body composition and the wellbeing of humans. The amount and distribution of adipose tissue is of great importance in these studies. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fat mass, adipokines and clinical complications of chronic kidney disease

    Author : Jonas Axelsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Chronic kidney disease; end-stage renal disease; insulin resistance; inflammation; cardiovascular disease; adipokines; leptin; epoetin; resistin; visfatin; AHSG; CD163; outcome.;

    Abstract : Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), irrespective of initial etiology, have a risk of cardiovascular morbidity (CVD) and mortality that is many-fold higher than that of a similar person without CKD. While traditional risk factors, such as hyperlipidemia, certainly contribute, these factors cannot by themselves explain the burden of CVD. READ MORE
