  1. 1. The role of chromatin in the induction and repair of DNA damage

    Author : Mats Ljungman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DNA damage; Chromatin; Kromatin; DNA;

    Abstract : The role of chromatin in the induction and repair of DNA damage has a dual nature.The constituent proteins of chromatin protect the DNA against the induction of DNAdamage, while at the same time they reduce the accessibility of DNA to repair enzymes. READ MORE

  2. 2. AtZDP, a Plant 3' DNA Phosphatase, Involved in DNA Repair

    Author : Isabel Valsecchi; Lars Rask; Per Jemth; Christer Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Molecular biology; AtZDP; plant long patch Base Excision Repair; DNA 3 phosphate blocking lesions; DNA repair; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : DNA bases can be modified by endogenous agents (e.g. oxidized by products of respiration and photosynthesis or methylated by gene silencing processes) as well as by environmental agents (e.g. READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies of DNA repair strategies in response to complex DNA damages

    Author : Ainars Bajinskis; Mats Harms-Ringdahl; Bo Stenerlöw; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ionizing radiation; complex DNA damage; indirect effect of radiation; dimethyl sulfoxide; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to study the role of the indirect actions of γ-rays and α-particles on the complexity of primary DNA damages and the repair fidelity of major DNA repair pathways: non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), homologous recombination repair (HRR) and base excision repair (BER). The complexity of radiation-induced damages increases and the proximity between damages decreases with increasing LET due to formation of ionization clusters along the particle track. READ MORE

  4. 4. Quantum Chemical Studies of Protein-Bound Chromophores, UV-Light Induced DNA Damages, and Lignin Formation

    Author : Bo Durbeej; Leif Eriksson; Tim Clark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quantum chemistry; quantum chemistry; calculations; density functional theory; excited states; photochemistry; chromophores; absorption spectra; bathochromic shift; isomerization; UV radiation; DNA damages; cycloaddition reactions; photoenzymic repair; electron transfer; lignin; polymerization; phenoxy radicals; dilignols; Kvantkemi; Quantum chemistry; Kvantkemi;

    Abstract : Quantum chemical methods have been used to provide a better understanding of the photochemistry of astaxanthin and phytochromobilin; the photoenzymic repair of UV-light induced DNA damages; and the formation of lignin. The carotenoid astaxanthin (AXT) is responsible for the colouration of lobster shell. READ MORE

  5. 5. Evolving the Methodology for Detection of Primary DNA Damage : Development, adaptation and assessment of the single cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay

    Author : Erik Bivehed; Björn Hellman; Hanna Karlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Comet assay; DNA damage; DNA strand breaks; Flash-comet; Genotoxicity; In vitro; Single cell gel electrophoresis; Polymerase assisted DNA damage assay PADDA ; TK6 cells; UCDAS; U937 cells; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Pharmaceutical Science;

    Abstract : Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is one of the most important molecules in nature. It is the fundamental carrier of evolutionary information and constitutes the genetic blueprint of all living organisms. Being the sole source of information, it is vital for the cell to transmit the correct genetic information from generation to generation. READ MORE
