  1. 1. Understanding hazards of nanoplastics using Daphnia magna

    Author : Egle Kelpsiene; NanoLund: Centre for Nanoscience; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Daphnia magna; nanoplastics; polystyrene; polylactic acid nanoparticles;

    Abstract : This thesis presents the results of studies focused on effects caused by nano-sized particles using freshwater filter feeder Daphnia magna. I showed that both positively and negatively surface charged PS NPs induced significant mortality in D. magna after a life-time (103 days) of exposure at low concentrations. READ MORE

  2. 2. Toxicogenomic responses in Daphnia magna

    Author : Asmerom Seyoum; Per-Erik Olsson; Ajay Pradhan; Joachim Sturve; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ERA; organic pollutants; toxicogenomic; phthalate; PFAS and DBE-DBCH;

    Abstract : Detection of various organic contaminants in the aquatic environment at low concentrations, has raised concerns for animal and human health. Structural similarities of these compounds to estrogens and ecdysones suggests that organic pollutants may interfere with hormonal system of aquatic organisms. READ MORE

  3. 3. Chlorinated Paraffins: improved understanding of their bioaccumulation and toxicity in Daphnia magna

    Author : Mafalda Castro; Magnus Breitholtz; Anna Sobek; Elena Gorokhova; Lillemor Asplund; Martin Scheringer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chlorinated paraffins; POPs; bioaccumulation; toxicity; ecotoxicology; aquatic toxicology; daphnia magna; liposomes; passive dosing; hydrophobic; mixtures; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are industrial chemicals, mainly used as flame retardants, plasticizers and metal cutting fluids. Their production has reached historically high levels in the last decade, with an annual production exceeding one million tonnes. READ MORE

  4. 4. New Approaches for Daphnia magna Toxicity Assessment

    Author : Berkay Paylar; Per-Erik Olsson; Jana Jass; Solomon Asnake; Ajay Pradhan; Joachim Sturve; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Risk assessment; toxicogenomics; zinc; copper; machine learning;

    Abstract : Risk assessment plays a crucial role in evaluating and managing the potential hazards and health effects associated with exposure to substances. In recent decades, the field of risk assessment has undergone significant expansion, embracing innovative approaches and methodologies. READ MORE

  5. 5. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    Author : Melanie Hedgespeth; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Abstract : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models.
