  1. 1. Nitrogen removal in treatment wetlands Factors influencing spatial and temporal variations

    University dissertation from Institutionen för fysik, kemi och biologi

    Author : Sofia Kallner Bastviken; Linköpings universitet.; Linköpings universitet.; [2006]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Wetlands; denitrification; macrophytes; nitrogen; nitrification; model; treatment wetlands; potential denitrification; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi;

    Abstract : Decreasing the nitrogen transport from land to surrounding seas is a major task throughout the world to limit eutrophication of the coastal areas. Several approaches are currently used, including the establishment of wetlands, to decrease the transport of nitrogen. READ MORE

  2. 2. Denitrification as an adaptive trait in soil and groundwater bacteria

    University dissertation from Department of Ecology, Lund University

    Author : Christer Bergwall; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [1997]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; forest soil; microcosm; aquifer; groundwater; reductase; nitrous oxide; nitric oxide; nitrite; nitrate; selection; adaptation; bacteria; nitrification; Denitrification; dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium; fertiliser; 15NO3-; 15NH4 ; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : The focus of the thesis is on selection and adaptation processes in bacteria with emphasis on denitrifying bacteria in groundwater. Other nitrogen transformation processes such as dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (nitrate ammonification) and nitrification of forest soil bacteria are briefly discussed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Denitrification in a Non-nitrifying Activated Sludge System Employing Recirculation from a Tertiary Nitrification Unit

    University dissertation from Chalmers University of Technology

    Author : Ann Mattsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola.; Chalmers University of Technology.; [1997]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Samhällsbyggnadsteknik och arkitektur; Civil engineering and architecture; Miljöteknik; Environmental engineering; denitrification; nitrogen removal; activated sludge; post nitrification; pilot plant;

    Abstract : A non-nitrifying, denitrifying activated sludge system has been demonstrated to give high denitrification rates and to be a useful component in a municipal wastewater treatment plant where partial nitrogen removal is required. One useful configuration is where clarified effluent from a non-nitrifying activated sludge system is nitrified in a tertiary nitrification unit and recirculated to the activated sludge system for denitrification. 5. 5. Degradation of organic matter in wastewater -Enhanced denitrification and removal of refractory organics

    University dissertation from Chemical Engineering, Lund University

    Author : Marinette Hagman; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [2007]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; denitrification; leachate; carbon source; advanced oxidation; Activated sludge; wastewater; oxygen uptake rate; ozone;

    Abstract : Degradation of organic matter takes place in many processes within a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The need for optimisations and extended degradation processes for both organics and nitrogen will increase as outlet demands are strengthened and increasing loads are desired. READ MORE
