  1. 16. Nitric Oxide Reductase from Paracoccus denitrificans : A Proton Transfer Pathway from the “Wrong” Side

    Author : Ulrika Flock; Pia Ädelroth; Simon de Vries; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; denitrification; nitric oxide reductase; heme copper oxidase superfamily; divergent member; proton transfer; electron transfer; single turnover; spectroscopy; periplasm; glutamate; proton pathway; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Denitrification is an anaerobic process performed by several soil bacteria as an alternative to aerobic respiration. A key-step in denitrification (the N-N-bond is made) is catalyzed by nitric oxide reductase (NOR); 2NO + 2e- + 2H+ → N2O + H2O. READ MORE

  2. 17. Control factors of the marine nitrogen cycle : The role of meiofauna, macrofauna, oxygen and aggregates

    Author : Stefano Bonaglia; Patrick Crill; Volker Brüchert; Per Hall; Chritoph Humborg; Risgaard-Petersen Nils; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nitrogen cycle; denitrification; DNRA; anammox; anoxia; hypoxia; eutrophication; meiofauna; macrofauna; aggregates; cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Abstract : The ocean is the most extended biome present on our planet. Recent decades have seen a dramatic increase in the number and gravity of threats impacting the ocean, including discharge of pollutants, cultural eutrophication and spread of alien species. READ MORE

  3. 18. Structural and biochemical analysis of two copper proteins - plastocyanin from spinach and nitrite reductase from Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.3

    Author : Frida Jacobson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plastocyanin; X-ray crystallography; nitrite reductase; copper geometry; redox; copper protein; photosynthesis; reduction potential; denitrification; electron transfer;

    Abstract : Plastocyanin from spinach and nitrite reductase from Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.3 are two copper-containing proteins that are involved in biological electron transport chains: plastocyanin operates in photosynthesis and nitrite reductase takes part in the denitrification pathway. 4. 19. Nitrogen Removal in Created Wetlands : Considerations – Challenges – Possibilities

    Author : Josefin E. Nilsson; Antonia Liess; Stefan Weisner; Eva Lindström; Jennifer Tank; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecosystem services; eutrophication; constructed wetlands; agricultural runoff; denitrification; wetland multifunctionality; climate change; nutrient retention; vegetation; hydrology; greenhouse gas emissions; biodiversity; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi;

    Abstract : Created wetlands in agricultural landscapes deliver a multitude of ecosystem services, one of which is the removal of nitrogen (N) from water to reduce eutrophication. Wetland N removal, primarily through denitrification, is influenced by various factors. READ MORE

  5. 20. Carbon utilisation for extended nitrogen removal and resource savings

    Author : Tobias Hey; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; primary sludge hydrolysis; carbon source; energy; resources; denitrification; environment; economy; volatile fatty acids; multiple pH point titration; wastewater treatment; activated sludge simulation.;

    Abstract : A full-scale in-line primary sludge hydrolysis experiment was conducted in one out of four primary settlers at the Klagshamn Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to test if the wastewater quality can be improved in terms of providing easily accessible carbon for possible pre-denitrification and the reduction of external carbon sources. The amount of easily accessible carbon produced, in the form of the volatile fatty acid (VFA), alkalinity and ammonium concentrations, was measured throughout the entire full-scale experiment at the outlet of the hydrolysis tank and that of the ordinary primary settler, which served as a reference line.
