  2. 7. Characterization of Bacterial Biofilms for Wastewater Treatment

    Author : Sofia Andersson; Gunnel Dalhammar; Bo Mattiasson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biofilm; extracellular polymeric substances; exopolysaccharides; interspecies interactions; wastewater treatment; denitrification; phosphorus removal; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Research performed at the Division of Environmental Microbiology has over the last years resulted in the isolation of possible bacterial key-organisms with efficient nutrient removal properties (Comamonas denitrificans, Brachymonas denitrificans, Aeromonas hydrophila). Effective use of these organisms for enhanced nutrient removal in wastewater treatment applications requires the strains to be retained, to proliferate and to maintain biological activity within theprocess. 3. 8. Coupled Hydrological and Microbiological Processes Controlling Denitrification in Constructed Wetlands

    Author : Johan Kjellin; Anders Wörman; Sara Hallin; Barbro Ulén; Björn Klöve; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Constructed wetland; Residence time; water flow modeling; denitrification rate; Tracer experiment; denitrifying bacteria community structure; Water in nature and society; Vatten i natur och samhälle;

    Abstract : Treatment wetlands play an important role in reducing nitrogen content in wastewater and agricultural run-off water. The main removal process is denitrification and the removal efficiency depends on the hydrological and microbiological features of the wetland, especially in terms of water residence times and denitrification rates. 4. 9. Denitrification: from genes to ecosystems

    Author : Christopher Jones; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Denitrification is a part of the global nitrogen cycle in which fixed nitrogen in the biosphere is returned to the atmosphere, which is mediated by diverse communities of microorganisms. This thesis seeks to gain a greater understanding of the ecology of denitrifying microorganisms by examining the pathway from four different aspects; gene, population, community, and ecosystem. 5. 10. Nitrogen transformations in wetlands: Effects of water flow patterns

    Author : Torbjörn Davidsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrobiology; hydrology; infiltration; subsurface flow; surface flow; wetland; nitrogen; Denitrification; mineralization; nitrification; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have studied nitrogen turnover processes in watermeadows. A watermeadow is a wetland where water infiltrates through the soil of a grassland field. READ MORE
