  1. 1. Artworks as diagrams : Diagrammatic reasoning and the epistemic potential of art

    Author : Leticia Vitral; Lars Elleström; Frederik Stjernfelt; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Semiotics; Aesthetics; Epistemology; Inquiry; Diagrammatic reasoning; Comparative literature; Litteraturvetenskap;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with establishing a bridge between matters of aesthetics and epistemology, by investigating the mechanisms through which artworks allow agents to derive knowledge through the former’s manipulation. It is proposed that, in order to understand the epistemic potential of artworks, we need to approach them as diagrams, in the sense developed by Charles Peirce. READ MORE

  3. 3. Invariants of knot diagrams and diagrammatic knot invariants

    Author : Olof-Petter Östlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematics; Knot theory; knot diagram; plane curve; Reidemeister move; finite degree invariant; combinatorial knot invariant; Gauss diagram; MATEMATIK; MATHEMATICS; MATEMATIK; matematik; Mathematics;

    Abstract : Two knot diagrams describe isotopic knots if and only if they can be connected by a sequence of planar isotopies and Reidemeister moves (cusp-, self-tangency-, and triple point moves). In this dissertation classes of knot diagrams, Reidemeister moves, and relations between sequences of Reidemeister moves are investigated, in a manner inspired by V. READ MORE

  4. 4. Implementation of complex polarization propagator theory for linear response properties of large molecular systems

    Author : Manuel Brand; Patrick Norman; Berta Fernández Rodríguez; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical Chemistry and Biology; Teoretisk kemi och biologi;

    Abstract : Since its beginning, the remarkable development from the first commercially available computers toward exascale supercomputers just within the span of a lifetime has been closely intertwined with the perpetual quest for the utilization of the arising computing power for the avail of theoretical chemistry. With the aim of further pushing the limits of computationally accessible molecular system sizes, this thesis includes the presentation of programming efforts, which brought forth two quantum chemical software codes, as well as a range of ab initio studies on carbon-based systems, enabled by the former. 5. 5. Bridge functions in strongly coupled plasmas : theory, simulations and applications

    Author : Federico Castello Lucco; Svetlana V. Ratynskaia; Panagiotis Tolias; Giorgio Pastore; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics; Atomic; Subatomic and Astrophysics; Atomär fysik; subatomär fysik och astrofysik;

    Abstract : Strongly coupled or non-ideal plasmas are multi-component charged systems in which at least one species possesses an average interaction energy that is comparable or larger than its thermal energy. Non-ideal plasmas are naturally occurring in dense astrophysical objects (e.g. giant planet interiors) but also engineered in the laboratory (e. READ MORE
