  1. 1. On the clinical use of digitalis : with reference to its prescription, maintenance therapy, intoxication and the patient's knowledge

    Author : Kurt Boman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Digitalis; prescribing habits; dosages; defined daily doses; geriatric patients; maintenance therapy; withdrawal; intoxication; serum digitalis concentration; patient s knowledge;

    Abstract : Digitalis in one of the most frequently prescribed drugs, especially to elderly people. The prescription of cardiac glucosides (1978) was studied by using statistics from Apoteksbolaget (the National Corporation of Swedish Pharmacies). READ MORE

  2. 2. The Ecology of Floral Signals in Penstemon digitalis

    Author : Rosalie Burdon; Amy L. Parachnowitsch; James Thomson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Antimicrobial; Bombus impatiens learning; indirect signal; multimodal; nectar; protandry; signal-reward association; Volatile Organic Compounds VOCs ; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I combined field observations and lab experiments to explore the ecological significance of floral signals in a North American wildflower, Penstemon digitalis. More specifically, to determine the potential mechanisms driving selection on floral scent, I studied how scent mediates interactions with pollinators and antagonists by (1) observing spatiotemporal variation in scent emission (2), floral volatile ability to suppress microbes (3) the honest advertisement of nectar, and (4) if scent could aid pollinator learning by reinforcing visual signals. 3. 3. Studies on Cytotoxic and Neutrophil Challenging Polypeptides and Cardiac Glycosides of Plant Origin

    Author : Senia Johansson; Tore Mellstrand; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical chemistry; cytotoxic; neutrophil; polypeptides; Phoradendron tomentosum; Digitalis purpurea; plant; mistletoe; MS MS; Edman degradation; breast cancer; macrocyclic peptides; multidrug resistance protein; primary structures; phoratoxin; isolation; digitoxin; cardiac lycoside; structure-activity; Farmaceutisk kemi; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Pharmacognosy; farmakognosi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the isolation and characterisation (biological and chemical) of polypeptides from plants. A fractionation protocol was developed and applied on 100 plant materials with the aim of isolating highly purified polypeptide fractions from small amounts of plant materials. READ MORE

  4. 4. Erythrocyte deformability studies by viscometry and filtrometry

    Author : Sylvi Persson; Pavo Hedner; Bo Sandhagen; Sweden Lund University Hospital of Lund Department of Medicine; []

  5. 5. Cytotoxic Compounds of Plant Origin – Biological and Chemical Diversity

    Author : Petra Lindholm; Anders Backlund; Lars Bohlin; Kristín Ingólfsdóttir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacognosy; pharmacognosy; cytotoxicity; antitumour; Nuphar alkaloid; cyclotide; thionin; cardiac glycoside; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi;

    Abstract : The development of resistance by tumour cells to chemotherapeutic agents is a major problem in cancer treatments. One way to counter this is to find compounds with cytotoxic mechanisms other than those of drugs in clinical use today. READ MORE
