  1. 1. On the Mechanisms Behind Hippocampal Theta Oscillations : The role of OLMα2 interneurons

    Author : Sanja Mikulovic; Richardson Leao; Klas Kullander; Stefan Remy; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hippocampus; interneuron; optogenetics; theta oscillations; anxiety;

    Abstract : Theta activity is one of the most prominent rhythms in the brain and appears to be conserved among mammals.  These 4-12 Hz oscillations have been predominantly studied in the dorsal hippocampus where they are correlated with a broad range of voluntary and exploratory behaviors. 2. 2. Molecular Adaptations in the Endogenous Opioid System in Human and Rodent Brain

    Author : Muhammad Zubair Hussain; Georgy Bakalkin; Anita Hansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endogenous Opioid System; Dynorphins; Lateralization; Alcohol Dependence; Emotions; Traumatic Brain Injury; Anterior Cingulate Cortex; Dorsal Striatum; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : The aims of the thesis were to examine i) whether the endogenous opioid system (EOS) is lateralized in human brain areas involved in processing of emotions and pain; ii) whether EOS responses to unilateral brain injury depend on side of lesion, and iii) whether in human alcoholics, this system is involved in molecular adaptations in brain areas relevant for cognitive control of addictive behavior and habit formation.The main findings were that (1) opioid peptides but not opioid receptors and classic neurotransmitters are markedly lateralized in the anterior cingulate cortex involved in processing of  positive and negative emotions and affective component of pain. 3. 3. 5-HT receptor-mediated modulation of glutamate transmission in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex and its relation to cognition and depression

    Author : Tiberiu Loredan Stan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Depression is a multifaceted disease which is marked by cognitive and emotional memory impairments. It is characterised by an imbalacement of serotonergic and glutamatergic system in brain areas such as hippocampus and prefontal cortex. READ MORE

  4. 4. Brain neurotrophin levels and mouse behavior : relationship to environmental influences

    Author : Shun-Wei Zhu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Environmental Enrichment; Intermittent Individual Housing; Physical Exercise; Anxiety; NGF; BDNF; Dorsal Hippocampus; Ventral Hippocampus;

    Abstract : All normal functions over the lifetime of an animal are based on a dynamic balance of at least three fundamental elements: brain, environment and behaviour. This thesis investigated different aspects of these three elements and revealed novel interactions of brain neurotrophins, environmental influences and emotional behaviour in mice. READ MORE

  5. 5. Neuropeptides, 'gaseous' messengers and classic transmitters : electrophysiological and histochemical studies on coexistence and interactions in the nervous system

    Author : Zhi-Qing David Xu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Dorsal root ganglion; galanin; hippocampus; 5-hydroxytryptamine; locus coeruleus; nerve injury; nitric oxide; noradrenaline.;

    Abstract : The distribution and functional role of neuropeptides were studied, with special reference to galanin (GAL) and the free radical nitric oxide (NO). In developing systems GAL expression was observed already at E14 in trigeminal and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and at E15 in sensory epithelia in ear, eye and nose, as well as at E19 during bone formation.
