  1. 1. Activity and Regulation of Telomerase in Malignant Cells

    Author : Anna Lindkvist; Ylva Paulsson-Karlsson; Göran Roos; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; apoptosis; ATC; c-Myc; drug sensitivity; ESCC; hTERT; hypoxia; IFN; MM; neuroblastoma; p53; telomerase; TGF-β; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : An important step in tumorgenesis is the acquisition of cellular immortality. Tumor cells accomplish this by activating the enzyme telomerase, and thereby avoiding replicative senescence. The aim of this thesis was to study the activity and regulation of telomerase in a panel of malignant cell types. READ MORE

  2. 2. Risk factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

    Author : Dariush Nasrollahzadeh Nesheli; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : esophageal cancer;

    Abstract : Aims: The etiology of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in the high risk areas is largely unknown and a few environmental risk factors which have been identified do not explain its oddly high incidence in esophageal cancer belt. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the association of opium/tobacco consumption, serologic gastric atrophy, gastric mucosa-associated microbiota and contact with farm animals with the risk of ESCC. 3. 3. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma : opportunities for prevention

    Author : Qiaoli Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the predominant histological subtype of esophageal cancer, a highly fatal malignant neoplasm. Most ESCC patients are diagnosed at a late stage when tumors are unresectable or have metastasized. READ MORE

  4. 4. Epidemiological studies on gastroesophageal reflux disease and esophageal cancer

    Author : Ji Zhang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Esophageal cancer is the seventh most common cancer and a lethal malignancy causing a considerably high number of deaths around the world. Despite intensive studies on risk factors associated with esophageal cancer, there is currently no promising method for prevention, early detection, or screening of esophageal cancer. READ MORE

  5. 5. Role of the CDKN2A and related cell cycle regulatory genes in melanoma and other human cancers

    Author : Johanna Smeds; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : CDKN2A; ARF; p53; cell cycle regulation; mutation; melanoma; esophageal squamous cell carcinoma;

    Abstract : The main objective of this thesis has been to investigate the involvement of the CDKN2A (p16INK4a and p14ARF) and related cell cycle regulatory genes in melanoma and other types of human cancer. The CDKN2A gene represents a unique locus in the entire human genome. READ MORE
