  1. 11. Forest edges in boreal landscapes - factors affecting edge influence

    Author : Ulrika Jansson; Per-Anders Esseen; Mats Nilsson; Timo Kuuluvainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aerial photographs; edge contrast; edge density; edge length; fetch size; forest fragmentation; lichen growth; line intersect sampling; pendulous lichen; photo interpretation; skogskant; flygbild; kantlängd; lav; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : The boreal forest in Fennoscandia has been subjected to major loss and fragmentation of natural forests due to intensive forestry. This has resulted in that forest edges are now abundant and important landscape features. Edges have documented effects on the structure, function and biodiversity in forests. READ MORE

  2. 12. Exploring layers of factors for farmers' adoption of ecological approaches

    Author : Gaëlle Leduc; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates different “layers” of factors for farmers’ adoption of ecological approaches, namely, individual, social and material layers of factors, with a mixed research methods approach. These layers of factors can be conceptualized using an onion as a metaphor, as factors influencing farmers’ behaviour can originate from the individual core, from the social environment or material environment, representing different layers in the onion. 3. 13. Reading Nature : Developing ecological literacy through teaching

    Author : Ola Magntorn; Gustav Helldén; Michael Reiss; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Readiing nature; Ecology; Outdoor studies; Teaching; Education; Pedagogik;

    Abstract : In this study the concept reading nature and its contribution to science education is discussed. Some scientific concepts relevant for reading nature are defined. Reading nature has to do with the ability to recognise organisms and relate them to material cycling and energy flow in the specific habitat which is to be read. READ MORE

  4. 14. Reading nature : developing ecological literacy through teaching

    Author : Ola Magntorn; Learning in Science and Mathematics (LISMA); []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In this study the concept reading nature and its contribution to science education is discussed. Some scientific concepts relevant for reading nature are defined. Reading nature has to do with the ability to recognise organisms and relate them to other organisms and to material cycling and energy flow in the specific habitat which is to be read. READ MORE

  5. 15. Spatial Spread of Organisms : Modeling ecological and epidemiological processes

    Author : Tom Lindström; Uno Wennergren; Colleen Webb; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Spatial kernel; Spatially explicit modeling; Disease transmission; Animal movements; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the spread of organisms in both ecological and epidemiological contexts. In most of the studies presented, displacement is modeled with a spatial kernel function, which is characterized by scale and shape. These are measured by the net squared displacement (or kernel variance) and kurtosis, respectively. READ MORE
