  1. 1. Classical and Quantum Descriptions of Proteins, Lipids and Membranes

    Author : Richard Tjörnhammar; Olle Edholm; Sagar Pandit; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quantum corrections; Coordination structure; Polarisation; Phase transitions; Kelvin differential equation; Line tension; Elastic membrane models; Molecular particle models; Zinc binding; Cholesterol and Phospholipids; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Abstract : In this thesis the properties of proteins and membranes are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The subject is decomposed into parts addressing free energy calculations in proteins, mechanical inclusion models for lipid bilayers, phase transitions and structural correlations in lipid bilayers and atomistic lipid bilayer models. 2. 2. Finite element methods for surface problems

    Author : Mirza Cenanovic; Peter Hansbo; Kent Salomonsson; Paul Houston; Jönköping University; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; trace finite element method; membrane; mean curvature; level-set method;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis is to further develop numerical methods for solving surface problems by utilizing tangential calculus and the trace finite element method. Direct computation on the surface is possible by the use of tangential calculus, in contrast to the classical approach of mapping 2D parametric surfaces to 3D surfaces by means of differential geometry operators. 3. 3. Recombinant spider silk for biomedical applications - from functionalizing surfaces of synthetic materials to in vitro modelling of tissues

    Author : Christos Panagiotis Tasiopoulos; My Hedhammar; Antonella Motta; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; recombinant spider silk; surface functionalization; in vitro tissue models; membrane-based models; barrier tissues; cell co-culture; tissue engineering; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Spider silk is a natural protein-based material known for its medicinal use and remarkable mechanical properties. Structures made thereof are both strong and elastic and have been shown to be favorable matrices for tissue engineering. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of Ubiquinone-10 on the Stability and Mechanical Properties of Lipid Membranes

    Author : Emma K. Eriksson; Katarina Edwards; Victor Agmo Hernández; Emma Sparr; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ubiquinone-10; lipid bilayers; membrane stabilizer; liposome permeability; osmotic shock; cuvettes; solanesol; Chemistry with specialization in Physical Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Ubiquinones are a group of fat-soluble molecules present in many biological membranes. The most abundant version in humans, ubiquinone-10 (Q10), plays an important role in the mitochondrial respiration chain and also functions as a powerful antioxidant. Accumulating evidence suggests that Q10 also could have other functions in the membrane. READ MORE

  5. 5. Modelling of the Fletcher-Gent effect and obtaining hyperelastic parameters for filled elastomers

    Author : Rickard Österlöf; Leif Kari; Per-Erik Austrell; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; filled elastomers; natural rubber; carbon black; Fletcher-Gent effect; Payne-effect; finite strain; hyperelastic;

    Abstract : The strain amplitude dependency , i.e. the Fletcher-Gent effect and Payne effect, and the strain rate dependency of rubber with reinforcing fillers is modelled using a modified boundary surface model and implemented uniaxially. READ MORE
