  1. 1. Collisional effects on electrostatic shock waves and heating in laser-generated plasmas

    Author : Andréas Sundström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plasma physics; inverse Bremsstrahlung; warm dense matter; binary collisions; electrostatic shocks; laser-plasmas;

    Abstract : Electrostatic shock waves are associated with an electrostatic field structure propagating at supersonic speed through laboratory or astrophysical plasmas. Shock ion acceleration schemes, based on the strong electrostatic field in the shock structure, show promising potential due to the narrow energy spread of accelerated ions – which can be applied in plasma diagnostics, the generation of warm dense matter or medical purposes. 2. 2. Interaction Between Antimicrobial Peptides and Phospholipid Membranes : Effects of Peptide Length and Composition

    Author : Lovisa Ringstad; Martin Malmsten; Per Hansson; Jeremy Ramsden; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adsorption; antibacterial; antimicrobial peptide; bilayer; ellipsometry; electrochemistry; electrostatic interactions; hydrophobicity; liposome; membrane; monolayer; phospholipid; secondary structure; supported bilayer.; PHARMACY; FARMACI; Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry; farmaceutisk fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Due to increasing problems with bacterial resistance development, there is a growing need for identifying new types of antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides constitute an interesting group of substances for this purpose, since they are believed to act mainly by disrupting the bacterial membrane, which is a fast and non-specific mechanism. 3. 3. Collisional effects and attosecond diagnostics in laser-generated plasmas

    Author : Andréas Sundström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; electrostatic shocks; plasma physics; plasma diagnostics; laser-plasmas; attosecond pulses; extreme-ultraviolet; Coulomb collisions;

    Abstract : When matter is radiated by laser light of extreme intensity, it is rapidly ionized, thereby forming a plasma. Such laser-generated plasmas can be used as sources of energetic particles and radiation, or to study astrophysically relevant phenomena in the laboratory and the behavior of matter under extreme conditions. 4. 4. Drug Partitioning into Natural and Artificial Membranes : Data Applicable in Predictions of Drug Absorption

    Author : Caroline Engvall; Birgitta Tomkinson; Katarina Edwards; Sven Engström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Bilayer disk; Cholesterol; Drug partitioning; Drugs; Electrostatic effects; Immobilized liposome chromatography; Liposome; Membrane protein; Model membrane; Oligonucleotide-liposome complex; Phospholipid; Phospholipid bilayer; Proteoliposome; Surfactant; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : When drug molecules are passively absorbed through the cell membrane in the small intestine, the first key step is partitioning of the drug into the membrane. Partition data can therefore be used to predict drug absorption. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nonlinear Dust Particle Dynamics and Collective Effects in Complex Plasmas

    Author : Gianfranco Sorasio; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Complex Dusty Plasmas; Self excited; Nonlinear; Forced Oscillations; Electrostatic Instabilities in current-carrying magnetoplasmas; Cross-field instabilities in magnetized dusty plasmas; Dust Acoustic Waves; Electrostatic Dust Cyclotron Waves; Fysik; Physics; Fysik; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Theoretical studies of dusty plasmas have been performed by focusing attention principally on collective phenomena and on grain motion. This thesis consists of a collection of seven published papers that explore both the collective behavior of a complex plasma system as well as the dynamics of grains in plasmas. READ MORE
