1. Genetic subtypes in unicellular intestinal parasites with special focus on Blastocystis
Abstract : The development of molecular tools for detection and typing of unicellular intestinal parasites has revealed genetic diversities in species that were previously considered as distinct entities. Of great importance is the genetic distinction found between the pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica and the non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar, two morphologically indistinguishable species. READ MORE

2. Assembly and proteolytic cleavages of gel-forming mucins
Abstract : Gel-forming mucins are large glycoproteins constituting the main structural component of themucus layer protecting epithelial surfaces of the body. This thesis aims to a deeper understandingof how gel-forming mucins are synthesized and assembled, and how they may interact with othermolecules. READ MORE

3. Molecular diagnosis of drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum and virulence factors in Entamoeba histolytica
Abstract : Four species of the protozoan parasite genus Plasmodium are known to infect man. Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent species is increasingly associated with resistance to antimalarial drugs. READ MORE

4. Molecular diagnosis and characterization of two intestinal protozoa : Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia intestinalis
Abstract : Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia intestinalis are two of the most important and most widespread diarrhea-related parasitic protozoa in the world. Approximately 1200 1500 cases of Giardia and 200 400 cases of Entamoeba are reported each year in Sweden, whereas the corresponding numbers are much higher in developing countries like Nicaragua. 5. Amoebiasis : diagnosis and prevalence in León Nicaragua
Abstract : About ten yearly cases of liver abscess are presented in University Hospital, León, Nicaragua. Based on serology most of them have been shown to be amoebiasis cases. This raised the question of Entameoba histolytica prevalence in the population. Based on microscopy of stool specimens and serology, about 20% prevalence was found. READ MORE
