1. Enterovirus Infections of β-Cells : A Mechanism of Induction of Type 1 Diabetes?
Abstract : The process of β-cell destruction that leads to type 1 diabetes (T1D) is incompletely understood and it is believed to be a result of both genetic and environmental factors. Enterovirus (EV) infections of the β-cells have been proposed to be involved, however, the effects of EV infections on human β-cells have been little investigated. READ MORE

2. Studies of the Effect of Enterovirus Infection on Pancreatic Islet Cells
Abstract : Enterovirus (EV) infections have been associated with the pathogenesis of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). However, the pathway(s) by which EV may induce or accelerate diabetes is not well understood. READ MORE

3. Enterovirus Implications in Type 1 Diabetes
Abstract : Human enteroviruses (HEVs), particularly Coxsackie B viruses (CVBs), might trigger the onset of type 1 diabetes (T1D), either by direct infection of the insulin-producing beta-cells or by an indirect inflammatory response. The overall aim of this thesis was to study the tropism of HEVs in isolated human pancreatic cell clusters in vitro including virus effects on islet function, gene-expression and ultrastructure. 4. Studies of Enterovirus Infection and Induction of Innate Immunity in Human Pancreatic Cells
Abstract : Several epidemiological and clinical studies have indicated a possible role of Enterovirus (EV) infection in type 1 diabetes (T1D) development. However, the exact casual mechanism of these viruses in T1D development is not known. READ MORE

5. Effects of Enterovirus Infection on Innate Immunity and Beta Cell Function in Human Islets of Langerhans
Abstract : This thesis focuses on enteroviral effects on human pancreatic islets. Most knowledge of viral effects on host cells relies on studies of immortalized cell lines or animal models. The islets represent a fundamentally different and less well studied cellular host. Also, enterovirus has been implicated in the etiology of type 1 diabetes (T1D). READ MORE
