  1. 1. Boundary Conditions for Spectral Simulations of Atmospheric Boundary Layers

    Author : Erik Boström; Philipp Schlatter; Bernard J. Geurts; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : An atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is generally a very high Reynolds number boundary layer over a fully rough surface that is influenced by different external forces. Numerical simulations of ABLs are typically demanding, particularly due to the high Reynolds numbers. READ MORE

  2. 2. Depression in older people with and without dementia : non-pharmacological interventions and associations between psychotropic drugs and mortality

    Author : Gustaf Boström; Håkan Littbrand; Erik Rosendahl; Peter Nordström; Knut Engedal; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Depression; Dementia; Exercise; Randomized controlled trial; Psychotropic drugs; Mortality; Gender; Residential facilities; Frail elderly; Epidemiology; Cohort study; geriatrik; Geriatrics; sjukgymnastik; Physiotherapy;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate associations between psychotropic drug use and death, associations between functional capacity, dependency in ADL and depression, and to evaluate a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce depressive symptoms, among older people with and without dementia.There is limited knowledge about the risk of death associated with psychotropic drug use among those aged ≥85 years, those with dementia, or those living in residential care facilities; groups that have a higher intake of psychotropic drugs and who are also more prone to adverse drug reactions. 3. 3. Modeling the influence of magnesium from alternative raw materials on the chemistry of Portland cement clinker

    Author : Erik Viggh; Rainer Backman; Dan Boström; Bo Björkman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Thermodynamic modeling; process modeling; Portland cement; clinker; periclase; magnesium oxide; alite; Scheil calculation; solid solutions; Physical Chemistry; fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The methods used in this thesis work were a combination of computational and modeling based laboratory experiments.Thermodynamic process modeling of the cement clinker process offers a tool for evaluating how changes in raw materials and process parameters affect the clinker quality. 4. 4. Attached Bacterial Communities in Lakes – Habitat-Specific Differences

    Author : Ann-Louise Haglund; Lars Tranvik; Helmut Fischer; Bengt Boström; Erik Törnblom; Paul del Giorgio; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; bacteria; freshwater; sediment; epiphyton; bacterioplankton; metabolically active; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : For many years, the importance of microorganisms attached to surfaces in littoral zones and wetlands has been disregarded when describing aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Supporting evidence is scarce but convincing that these microbial communities are not only very productive but can often serve as major regulators of nutrient and carbon dynamics in many freshwaters. 5. 5. Co-firing complex biomass in a CFB boiler : ash transformation, corrosion control and materials selection

    Author : Henrik Hagman; Dan Boström; Rainer Backman; Mats Lundberg; Lars-Erik Åmand; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ash transformation; process control; equilibrium calculations; boiler availability; failures; alloy selection; alloy degradation; vortex finder VF ; service life estimation; sulfation; chloridation; high temperature corrosion; biomass; waste derived fuels; forest residues; RDF; Biomal; slaughterhouse waste; peat; waste wood; industrial waste water treatment sludge; HAD; RSMT; Alloy 253MA; Alloy 310S; Alloy 800H HT; Alloy DS; Alloy 600;

    Abstract : The effects of greenhouse gas net emissions on global warming, stricter legislation on waste handling, and the pursuit of ever cheaper heat- and power production are all important factors driving the introduction of complex fuels in incineration plants. However - without fundamental knowledge regarding ash transformation, corrosion control, and materials selection – this introduction of potentially economically and environmentally beneficial fuels, might instead cause economic loss and environmentally adverse effects.
